This is incredibly tragic, so I’m not posting it as some kind of misery porn, but the video coming out is like nothing I’ve ever seen.

Apparently (they’re still sorting out the cause) an earthquake caused avalanches/mudslides and maybe even a glacier break off and sent water rushing down very steep and narrow river valleys.

The videos are things that should only be in nightmares. I don't know how populated the region is but you have to think many thousands are going to be dead or never found. Is it even possible to recover and dig out from that? Awful.

Don't know if true or not, but I read a report allegedly penned by a "scientist" studying the satellite imagery seeking to determine the cause of this catastrophe. In the report the scientist warns that a portion of the calved glacier appears to be "suspended" above the drop zone poised to plummet and send yet another tsunami along the same path of disaster.

Avalanche in the Rockies can top 100 mph. I’m sure these flash floods are just as fast.

But, in some of the videos, they show people running, much faster than people can run.
That was the tip off.

That's something I recall from natural hazards and other classes at state. We used to talk about movies being unrealistic and outrunning stuff, real life you aren't outrunning something like that.
Glacier outburst flooding is one thing but this even looks like it was started by earth quake or avalanche that caused a glacial outburst. Which crazy enough I had some friends working an event for one of those glacial outburst in Alaska just a week or so ago.

The avalanche triggered an earthquake whose time was preciously measured by geological equipment in the area. The security camera at the Nepal/China border facility is time stamped and shows the wave arriving 7 minutes after the earthquake. These 2 sites were 13 miles apart. It was devastating fast.

I watched these videos this morning. Horrific.

Looked like a tidal wave hitting the movie World War Z. Damn water coming down that valley at about 200-300 mph and people running about 5-6 mph to save their lives. No chance whatsoever. And what were 90+ Americans doing over in that part of the world anyway? For most, that will be their burial spot. Doubt they can ever dig down hundreds of feet to recover those bodies.
