What size pole?
How much space does it take up?
Where did you get it?

I'm looking to invest in one this year. I want a decent sized one but I have a 4 door sedan that is usually packed to the brim with tailgating essentials (Grill, Tent, chairs, food) so I won't have a ton of space. Ideally it would fit across the back seat floor.

Is this just for hoisting flags or are you looking for something that will also accommodate entertainers.

Buy a heavy duty one. I learned the hard way. Wind gust before the OSU game snapped mine in half. I have to get a new one or make one.

Here's my current flagpole:

(And, no, we're not talking about that type!)



16' high, breaks down into 3 separate sections, 2 x 6', 1 x 5'. Rides from the front dash to the back window. The base is something I threw together at the last minute from my dad's scrap wood back in 1988 - I had bought the original pole (~11 ft) with the small pirate flag (3' x 5') back then so that people could find us in the Giants Stadium parking lot. Didn't think about it until the night before the game that I could not just stick that into the ground, so constructed that with 2x4's and nails. Redid it (with the same wood - tradition!) about a decade ago, but this time with #14 2-3" wood screws. The base fits perfectly into the trunk. I also upgraded the flag when I extended the flagpole to now fly a 4' x 6' Jolly Roger.

Now, that being said, the gameplan is to add a second flagpole, so I'm looking at a wide variety of collapsible flagpoles. You can get them from 12' up to 25'. One place to consider that is run by an RU guy is Rising Flags. But search the web as there are a lot of options. You also need to decide how you want to support it - a lot of people use wheel stands, however you can have a base (as I have) or you can have something that goes into the ground to hold it.

By the way, a very funny story that happened in 2005 or 2006: at the front of the Yellow Lot, a group of recent alumni had a party going, with a pickup truck which had in the back a huge flagpole, going up 20-30 feet high from the bed. Not sure what they were flying from it. However, they had constructed this from what appeared to be 10 or 12 foot 2x4's. Needless to say, once we got a good gust of wind, that thing snapped and came flying down. Fortunately it didn't appear anyone got hurt. But that has now become a part of our tailgate lore shared with newcomers every year.

I've had something like this and it packs small. The pole is not the heaviest duty but has lasted several years. The tire stand is simple and solid.

I have that same one, 20 foot, that is linked above from Amazon. I have used it for 3 seasons with 2 flags on it. Works great.

The pole is also useful for retrieving footballs and random toys stuck in trees.

Just don't forget to put the base back in the car before leaving the tailgate.

I knew someone would pick that up! These are three wood sections that are sliced diagonally at the end, so you have 6 inches of overlap where the sections meet.

We have 17' and 20' telescoping flags just like the ones in the link. They work great! We store them and all our flags in a cheapo heard side riffle case.

We also use it to hoist a digital antenna.

Also use the telescoping flag pole. Get the holder for tailgates , you put one wheel on it and stick in flag pole. I also got the home holder sunk it in cement and as soon as I get home stick it back in there and raise my flags at home. Get the solar flag pole light so you can fly your flags 24 hours.

So these telescoping flags are pretty durable and won't snap? They look pretty flimsy but they hold up well?

Do you think the 20' one will fit easily across the floor of a 4 door Sedan when packed up?

Yes they are durable. But be smart. Very High wind and large, wet flags will give you trouble.

We routinely fly 2 3x5 flags off each in almost all weather. They break down into 3 parts: the base (goes under the tire), the adapter (screws into base and hold the pole), and the pole itself. Max length is about 3 1/2 ft. The base is flat and the adapter is about 18 in long and 2 in round. Would def fit in the car, probably on the rear deck behind passengers heads.

The one I have "telescopes" inside of each section. Very durable, I fly it at home most of the year. After 4 years still going great. I fly two flags on it no problem.

The web site no longer takes credit cards, only PayPal or cash. I usually deliver them and show you how to properly use and maintain them. the 20' pole is $149, the wheel stand is $50. We also have kits with both and a 4x6' U.S. Flag and 3'x5' R flag for $289.

These are not cheap flags or poles. They generally last 10+ years and handle high wind well.

I bought a 28 ft telescoping fiberglass pole with a wheel stand from collegeflagsandbanners.com . I love it. You may be able to find it cheaper at SAMs or Costco. $120 for the pole and $50 for the stand.

You have to go to Rising Flags. Big Rutgers supporter and has the best poles. I bought a 20' pole back in 2007 from him and it is still working great with no issues. We fly a 4x6 and 3x5 every game and I also sometimes throw a second 3x5 on the bottom as well using the bottom hook for the top of the flag and a wind screen tie for the bottom of it. Best pole you can get
