Fix Defense

Roster construction big fail. Adding shooters to 2 NBA talents not needed. Should have concentrated on defensive guys instead. That said what can be done?
This team screams play ZONE. I know giving up 3s and probably rebounding are weaknesses. But in the paint scoring has killed us. And look. Ace and Dylan want to exert their energy on offense. As they should. The shooters Martini, Acuff, and Hayes all weak man defenders. Ogbole and Lathan can’t defend pick and role. But they can clog the middle of a zone. And better chance to stay out of foul trouble. What Pike is doing is putting a round peg in a square hole.
Zone probably goes against Pike’s core philosophy. But guys. Offense is not the problem this year.

Said this since first game…issue is it will expose more 3s against us and seems that teams who play us always have career nights for some odd reason.
I would prefer to protect the rim at this point and potentially keep some of our larger players near the rim for potential rebounds

We used start in a zone occasionally and then switch to man after the offense got into their zone offense.

Playing a zone defense for 5-10 possessions isn't crazy.

Given our poor defense, our offense is a problem. With this defense, we have to maximize our offense and we aren't. The offense would be a train wreck without Harper and terrific ISO ability.

I still don’t see offense as the problem. We scored 46 in the 1st half against Princeton. 46-42 used to be the final score in most of these games. Fix the damn defense.

I agree the zone would help a lot of the boys out on the defensive side and hopefully close up the lane.
It’s hard to watch Pikes frustration when we run zone and give up an easy bucket. He goes immediately back to man because it’s too uncomfortable for him to watch zone.

It's Princeton and we have Harper and Bailey.

We don't have the roster to fix the defense. Isn't that what your post said (I agree with that)? Anything more than an occasional possession where we play zone is unlikely to be productive.

We need to purge our memory of past Pike defenses, unless we can pick up players mid season.

If one fancies this as a good offensive team then when looking at raw data we actually have more work to do on offense than defense
