We could potentially be one crab leg incident away from Nicky Fitz starting at QB this year

You mean one crab leg incident away from him moving up to 3rd string?

Gabbert and Ryan Griffin will both be ahead of him. Don’t expect Fitz to make the 53-man unless one of those guys gets injured, or he proves to be useful at another position.

The Bucs played Taysom Hill twice last year. I’d bet they were paying attention.

The Saints only carried two other QB’s on the 53-man roster though. Nobody in the NFL carries 4 QB’s, and Fitz isn’t a good enough passer to move up to 3rd string.

That probably wouldn't be ideal for Nick.

If he can make the team he's gonna need a year on the bench. Would love to see him catch on as a Taysom Hill type project. I can't quite visualize Nick as an NFL starter, but he's a heck of an athlete. With enough hard work and a break or two I could visualize him as a backup QB in the league.

Let’s all hope he can learn to play TE, got the speed. Hill opened up a package that Fitz can run. Let’s hope they see value and keep him for that reason. Kid deserves a chance to play, wish him the best in Tampa.

I doubt both Gabbert and Griffin are both on the 53 man roster. Fitz has a chance due to the change of pace or short yardage offense. He has a little above 0% chance to play as the normal QB even with a crab leg / uber assault incident.

Hope he makes the team. I think he has a better shot than the average undrafted player.

More to this point, Taysom Hill lined up at RB, TE, WR, gunner, KR and PR this season, in addition to his roster spot at QB. He also had the fasted 40 time on a roster that includes Ted Ginn and Alvin Kamara.

In no way shape or form is Taysom Hill and Nick Fitz a fair comparison, for Nick's sake.

That said, doubt he makes an NFL roster at back-up QB now or ever. In the age of WR-to-QB touchdown throws being commonplace, he has tremendous value, but if that is to happen, his NFLPA card is going to say "wide receiver".

Under the right system and coach I think he can find a spot in the offense. Don’t know if Tampa bay is that place

Agreed - Fitz is nowhere near the athlete Hill is. But there's little risk to bringing Fitz to camp, and if he's good enough to be your 3rd QB, maybe you can also use him elsewhere on the field or in red zone read options (hahahaha), to actually get some production out of that roster spot instead of a clipboard holder.

Can he catch?

He was on our hands team at one point I know. Not sure if that equates to being able to catch, and if it does, if it means that much considering our WR depth the past few years. But he snagged at least one onside kick attempt.

Tampa Bay may be one of the only places. Bruce Arians is as innovative of an offensive mind as they come. If Fitz can succeed in the league then Arians will find a way.

this is true, but i do believe I remember reading an article about him saying the spread offense was ruining the offense product coming out of college to the NFL. That article was from about 10 years ago so i'm not sure if he has changed his tune. He seemed pretty high on Nick. I wonder if his connection to State and State boosters he might still be friends with had anything to do with Nick ending up there. Nick definitely needs an innovative offense to be involved for sure. I would like to see him Josh McDaniels and Bill Belicheck to be honest. I think they would figure out a way to get him on the field. He is way too athletic not to be on the field somewhere. He isn't the best throw, but he is top class runner in and run away from people surprisingly quick. Imagine having Brady and Fitz in the same backfield. Fitz with the Bucs will be interesting. I think if he keeps his head on straight and works with a coach he can make the roster, but I don't think he will start in a true Pro system. He will have to find his niche.

100%, but I genuinely don't believe he was invited to camp to compete at rookie camp as a QB when #2 is a seasoned NFL veteran (former 1st rounder) and #3 a minimum salary player who's going on his 7th NFL season, 5th with the team (also 5th in the same QB room with Winston).

#1-3 are the same archetype, there are no other QB comparisons in the NFC South to warrant carrying him on the practice squad for scouting purposes, and his signing bonus doesn't say "we think he can be the next Tony Romo". I have enough respect for Nick to say I think they think he can be either a full-time skill player (i.e. WR) or provide options at WR and 1 or 2 other spots (special teams?). But if we're cheering for him to be QB3, some of you laughing at Bo Wallace holding the clipboard at EMCC will need to backtrack.

Comparing him to Hill though is lunacy, because it's lunacy for a player like Hill to exist and for the Saints to have ever carried him on a 53-man roster in the first place. I'm glad it's worked out to this point but we're reliant on our 3rd string QB blocking punts (he's legitimately out there blocking punts). This is classic New Orleans Saints blows-up-in-your-face. Brees and Bridgewater are both going to go down when we're 15-0 or something and our QB3, the only player available or capable of taking the playbook into the playoffs, is a glorified slot receiver with bad hands.
