I can't rank Durkin or Ash because I've never seen them coach. I was debating between Chryst and Franklin back and forth and gave up.

Lovie Smith has been a very good NFL head coach and will be a great coach for the Illini. I can totally stomach him being #5 on this list. You don't lead a team to the Super Bowl with Rex Grossman as your QB by accident. That said, James Franklin is the most OVERRATED coach of all time. He's such a bum it's not even funny. My PSU friends cannot stand him and want the Temple guy

If this list were made a year ago, Ferentz would probably be 6 or 7.

Too early to tell on Lovie. Adds instant credibility for the program, but that doesn't mean he'll adapt to being a HC at the college level, which is more about sheer force of personality than anything else.

On the other hand .... Franklin is all personality and little substance. And yes I agree with what CCF said about PSU fans wanting Matt Rhule, Temple's coach.

Lovie has the ability to leap a spot but he has to coach at Illinois and recruit well before I move him up. Franklin I think is just over hyped penn st with all their tradition has constantly under performed with him there. Looking at the top of the list the Big10 has some really good coaches.

Agree and He will have to prove on the recruiting road. Remember, recruiting is #1, #2 and #3 in winning at the collegiate level.

Dumb lists like this just make us all dumber. It is pretty much Dantoni,Urban and Hairball, then everyone else, with extra points for seniority.

I do not see Lovie as a strong recruiter. He's so laid back that he seems to be almost asleep at times. His expressions on the Bear sidelines were priceless, it's like he was lost at times. He sucked at TB the last two seasons. Sorry I don't think he's that great and Illinois is just a dumpster fire.

Come on man.... I can't agree with you on everything now can I?

Actually, looking back, I think it was because you had Lovie ahead of Fitz. Lovie needs to prove something on the collegiate level before putting him ahead of Fitz who I think is one of the best damn CEOs of a college football program in the country - which is a huge part of the head coach's job.

Yeah, I was debating those two. Franklin/Chryst gave me more struggle, but Fitz/Lovie was a debate for me. I had to give it to Lovie as he's made a Super Bowl, and I'm ready to move him down when I see his recruiting, development of college players, and ability to scheme within the confines of college player's athletic ability.

I really don't think it's fair to say we are still a "dumpster fire." We certainly were, and we certainly have a rebuild ahead in the two revenue sports, but we have infinitely more stability and optimism going forward than in the fall.

I don't know if Franklin is all that great, but he inherited a team that had no o-line depth and was well short of a full complement of scholarship players. He's recruited well the past two years and is off to a good start for 2017. I'm going to wait a year or two before I write him off. That said, I'm not going to rate him ahead of Fitz until he actually beats Fitz.

I actually would put Urban 1 and Dantonio 2, but otherwise I agreed with all of his list. Fitz 5 is right I think, I would put him ahead of Lovie for now. And Chryst ahead of Franklin for sure. If I had to make a second revision I would move Chryst above Wilson and Lovie I think.

(Mostly cause while Wilson is a very good offensive coach, he still has not yet once found a way to field a halfway respectable defense)

The reasoning for me putting Dantonio 1 is because of how he developed his talent and now that he is recruiting similar talent to what Urban is getting I expect MSU to continue to get better

Dantonio is a great coach, but he's number 3. Dantonio would have the best team in the country if he brought in top five recruiting classes, but he can't.

Both for NU's good and because I'm interested, I would love to see Dantonio get a job at Florida or Texas or USC - I think he'd win national titles given the in-state talent and tradition at those places.

I can't understand why Lovie is even in the conversation or on the list. He has not won a single college game as a HC and won't until at least this coming fall.

Because I feel that an NFL coach look appealing to recruits and that will lead to better talent and that should lead to an improvement of what is now a dumpster fire of an Illinois football program

Maybe but putting a coach who has never won a college game in a poll of who's the best, is pure fallacy.

Now that I have heard this and other points it has made me rethink and I would move Meyer ahead of him because of the success he has had at the program and that is why Harbaugh is still 3 there is always ways to move yourself around on the list but if you look at program success it is hard to move Dantonio below 2

1. Meyer ... instant impact coach who can win big games. Only coach in BIG that can recruit straight up vs. Saban.
2. Harbaugh ... instant impact coach even at Michigan.
3. Dantonio ...2016 drops him from 1st to 3rd. Still a Top 10 coach in the Country.
4. Chryst ... Wisconsin is way better than it should be and a legit Top 5-7 team. Candidate to move down next year.
5. Fitz ... Does more with less and receives bonus consideration for players' academic/career achievement.
6. Ferentz ... consistently develops what Iowa can recruit at a very high level.
7. Riley ... excellent coach and great man. Candidate to move up soon in this pecking order.
8. Wilson ...excellent offensive coach and questionable guy. Program has consistently improved.
9. Claeys ... His Gophers were very well prepared vs. NU this year.
10. Franklin ... He can recruit ... and that's really important. Will be off the list when PSU cans him 2-3 years from now.
11. Lovie ... NFL coaching career not a good indicator of collegiate success. 2016 Illini still bad. Candidate to move up if he stays.
12. Hazel ... Great guy ... worth taking a chance on. Not a program builder.
13. Maryland ... TBD
14. Rutgers ... TBD
