Hoosier fan here, bringing the wife and teenage boys to wave at the kids and enjoy some football. We are staying at Coralville and zero plans beyond football. We get out and about, what are the can't miss places before and after? Any recs are appreciated.

Cig is as crazy as he sounds. IU will play their asses off and Mendoza can sling it.

In Coralville, the best area is near the Hyatt hotel.......30hop, Tribute, Iowa Athletic Club, etc. The real action is downtown IC though, in the Ped Mall by the main campus. Great walking area with tons of bars & restaurants like Airliner, St Burch, Pullman, Mickeys, many others. Will be tons of college kids hitting the bars after the game, but great people watching & some less busy places not overrun by those kids.

Enjoy the trip & hopefully we can stay in the game long enough to keep it interesting.

this is a pretty solid list. If in Coralville, the Iowa River Landing area is the place to be. The Athletic Club is a great sports bar with a few fun video games for teenagers. Right across the street there is a great rooftop atmosphere at 30hop, but they may not be a hit with the boys.

You should check out the ped mall atmosphere, but I wouldn’t don it past 10:30 as it’ll start to get pretty crazy near 11.

I always like Big Grove on Gilbert st, a few blocks from downtown. It’s the biggest restaurant in the area with a huge open yard with firepits, bags etc…pretty good menu…they make a mean chicken sammy.

Enjoy the little city

WIth the emphasis on bars and restaurants here's a different angle.

Campus is divided by the Iowa River. West side is sports, law, health sciences and hospital. East side is liberal arts.

Downtown IC is adjacent to the East side. Walk the Pentacrest and Old Capitol area (right across the street from "downtown"). That gives you the real U of Iowa vibe.

Indiana always brings up special memories for me. I loved playing them in Bloomington as well...

Hayden Fry's first game was against Indiana and I remember being so stressed out that I got a migraine headache and couldn't go to the game. I'm listening on the radio and we're up 26-3 at half. After 20 years of losing we're finally going to win one! I fell asleep with a cold compress on my head and when I awoke the game was over and Iowa had lost 30-26, outscored 27-0 in the second half. Did I just have a nightmare? I couldn't believe it.

1983 - We crush the Hoosiers at Kinnick 49-3. Iowa (Fry) calls a TO with just a little time left to thrown into the endzone. Sam Wyche is pissed, huddles the team up after the game, points to the scoreboard and vows revenge. I would be the only season he coaches the Hoosiers...

Losing to Antwann Randal El 3/4 games '98 - '01. What a stud and problem he was for Iowa. 7500 yards passing and almost 4,000 rushing...

2009 at Kinnick. We're 8-0 rated # 6 in the country. We're special. We're down 21-7 with about 8 minutes into the third quarter. Indiana is ready to score again to take a 28-7 lead. Tyler Sash intercepts a pass and goes 86 yards for a TD. Iowa scores 35 second half points to remain undefeated with a 42 -24 victory...

I've never seen a game turn so dramatically on one play like that.

This Iowa's homecoming weekend. There is the parade that is downtown Friday night, followed by a free concert on the Pentacrest featuring Teezo Touchdown. No clue who that is, maybe your kids do.

If that isn't your cup of tea, the IRL suggestions work.

If you want something different, drive out to the Amana Colonies for a meal. Not too far to go, but sort of 'Amish' type restaurants with food served family style. Food is good old home cooking type stuff and no 'foo foo' stuff.
The Amanas were started by a 'sect' from New York and everything was community owned. I think in the 50s or 60s the Feds cracked down and the colonies became individually owned businesses. They have various businesses like furniture, I think woolen mills, etc. Have fun.

Don't waste your time unless big bowls of bland food are your thing...along with a few woolen mills and furniture stores. Your teenage boys will revolt.
Stick to downtown IC and campus.

As mentioned before, downtown IC is a great place to walk around, eat, people watch. Airliner pizza is good.
I also really like Big Grove Brewery which is a few blocks south of downtown IC -really nice place to hang out and drink a couple of beers, cornhole in back to help entertain the kids.
In Coralville, the River Landing area has many restaurants / bars but not many college kids. It's nice but, IMHO, doesn't have the same vibe as downtown IC.
I like The Vine Tavern which has been in IC forever. There is one near downtown IC and another in Coralville -pork tenderloin sandwich is good!
If your family has a sweet tooth try the Hamburg Inn No.2 Pie Shakes -edge of downtown.

Enjoy the game!

What do your kids like for food or to do outside of attending the game? Probably won't be a ton of time I'm guessing.

I don't wish you any luck on Saturday other than for your players not to get hurt. We need all the luck over on our side.

Big Grove is definitely family friendly kind of place. Park at Riverfront Crossings Park, off of S Clinton and walk as you won't find a parking spot there. Short walk from the park though...

I grew up in Iowa City, but haven't live there in years and only visit on occasion. As an insider/outsider, I still love my old school places like The Airliner and The Vine, but I was really impressed with Big Grove. Great beer and a fabulous beer garden. In Coralville, 30Hop has a fine craft beer selection and upscale bar food. If you're looking for the best of dive bars, then there's no place like George's. Burgers like you can't get anywhere else.

I love Georges! Somehow I always ended up there after the downtown IC bars closed.... Definitely old school but very worthwhile!

Ended up at a top notch tailgate courtesy of a guy we met at the Athletic club (greet vibe, fun place, terrible food). Hit the ped mall for breakfast, walked across the bridge with the masses. Hit magic Mike's spot where you can see the jumbotron from the tailgate. Walked around the stadium and soaked in the chamber of commerce weather. Pre-game was spectacular. Kinnick is the real deal.

Hoosiers came out smoking, then it got hot. The sun was brutal and Iowa made it an Iowa game. Kudos to Iowa football and Iowa fans. If Mendoza doesn't throw that dart to Surat, I probably wouldn't be so complementary. All in all, just a brilliant day at Kinnick.

Made the walk post game to Big Grove and it was awesome. Best of luck rest of the way Hawks.

Well we are kindred spirits, both fanbases hate those damn Boilermakers
Perhaps. The IU/Purdue hate is mostly born from Purdue. IU fans generally hate UK basketball more than anything. OSU is the football hate. It's always good to beat PU, but PU is the place they chant, "IU sucks" at every home basketball game.

What were your impressions of Kinnick's crowd noise? What other venues have you been to? It's always interesting to hear the POV of opposing fans.

So Purdue is obsessed with IU in the same way that MooU is obsessed with Iowa. Sounds about right.

Glad you had a good road trip. We had you and let you off the hook. Damn.

OSU is always going to be the loudest, but it's a different loud. Kinnick was as loud as anywhere else I've been. Off the top of my head, in the B10 we've been to UM, MSU, PU, Madison, and Champaign. Also Notre Dame a couple of times.

I was down low in a corner at Kinnick and it felt almost like a basketball game. It was a perfect day, super competitive game, and super loud. We made the drive from Bloomington and it was an awesome experience. Highly recommend already.

Not so fast my friend….. it was Lee Corso
