True. And they weren't playing in front of virtually a home crowd with a NPOY and a lottery pick and at least three other guys who will get run in the developmental league.
Cal is a joke, but sadly, the jokes really on BBN.
I'd also like to add that he did the same thing to Poythress.
Poythress was a more efficient player as a Freshman than he was a Sophomore and Junior. Cal's constant cajoling about "toughness" or whatever rather than actual basketball insight made him a worse player for two seasons.
Jeff, we will still have the fans that will always be brainwashed by Cal and think he is the next Christ. I personally hated him at Memphis but tried to like him because he was out coach. I also thought he was just an arrogant prick that could recruit but did nothing as an in game coach. Yes, I hate what Cal has become and his stubbornness and arrogance will always keep him from greatness. I love Kentucky basketball but completely hate our coach.
I don't think UNC is great. Proved that during the year. Kansas was the peak of this year's team. It was when the media sold UK fans on the team being the favorite. Why? Bill Self and Kansas are a pet cat of the media. What did they do with Tennessee after that game? Lost 2. They were 8-8 away from Rupp.
TyTy's injuries limited him. He came back and played and it was obvious he wasn't the same player.
Grady is midpack. He is his own issue. He got scared to shoot and shook. That's on him. Did UGA win games? There are a lot of guys who can play on **** teams and produce stats. Wheeler is a great backup PG for a program like UK. He's completely worthless in a halfcourt basketball game. Left open. Can't finish at rim consistently. Hurt UK vs Duke/ND early, hurt them late in year too.
Agree that Kentucky should beat St. Peters--no disagreement at all but they were closer to this outcome then any Final Four run based on what history tells you of championship contenders and specifically UK contending teams.
No, but what did this group win. You are at Kentucky. Was Toppin best player at Rhode Island? Wheeler at UGA? And if he was, it's UGA and they sucked. Grady was putting up numbers on teams that made 1 NCAA with him. Immediately made it without him. Oscar was a 5 star McDonald's AA and TyTy when healthy was great. He got a good player but oft injured CJ Fredrick. Keion Brooks has been a one dimensional player all along.
What future NBA star does UK possess? There's a reason the NBA guys on the set said "there's not a great team in CBB this year-no real shocking upsets will take place" and they haven't been wrong. Was it disappointing? Yes. But what about this year's Kentucky team said this would be a blowout? When's the last time they blew someone out? When's the last time they looked like this team media was talking up? Oscar was great and consistent. TyTy was beat to hell. Nobody was scared to play them and they shouldn't be.
Sorry but reality is that Oscar/TyTy will likely be only players on this team who took the court that are NBA certainties. Maybe Toppin with more development but I don't know if he's got it between the ears. I mean UK lost 3 of their last 7 games since his infamous "We needed that wakeup call back to dominating". That sound like a player who has a clue what the **** is actually going on?
Cal/Staff tried to bluff/talk this team into being "great" and it was good. So while I agree/think they should win a game like this, them losing wasn't any shock. They were a flawed team which was improvement from a disaster last year.
I have no idea what you are talking about. This team choked because of poor coaching and all the excuses in the world isn't going to change that. St. P beat us because their coach out coached our coach. He wasn't too proud to try something different defensively to see if he could stop the smallest guy on the court from scoring. He wasn't stuck on stupid doing the same thing wondering why the outcome was the same. This team was far more talented than St. P and not a single talking head has said anything different. To pretend otherwise is simply another attempt to make up excuses for someone who can't coach.

A high Lottery Pick? TyTy when healthy? I'll give you that. Oscar? No. Great college player and should make NBA but is he a star? Rest of this team that played (the best talent is Sharpe and he didn't play) is not that special. They are and were beatable. What talent do they all possess? Speed? Great shooting? Finishing? Good playmakers? The team had 2 playmakers--Wheeler/Washington and everyone else was a play finisher. I've tried to tell majority of this board Davion Mintz is not very good for 2 years but he has a dog and fans love that. What about him is great? What does he do great?
Understand your pain due to a bad loss, but this team wasn't playing well down the stretch and accomplished 0. Absolutely nothing. So why you want to blame the HC for that-I'd agree if we're talking roster. A Kentucky roster that Cal used to be putting out would've looked like Oscar, Banchero, Hardy, TyTy, and Sharpe. Now? Hey you have a 5th year guy who is afraid to take a shot and a 6th year guy who can't shoot. The 2 best players were guys who were highly regarded out of HS (Oscar/TyTy). The rest? Played like guys who were still in college and weren't recruited by Kentucky.
I haven't said anything about any UK player being an NBA star. I said that UK players are much better than St. P and our coach is making considerably more than St. P's coach. Cal has never done anything close to what was done to him tonight. Before the game started, the talking heads were saying that this team has a habit of playing down to the talent of their opponent.
If you have been following my posts, you would know that my thoughts about Cal didn't just happen. I have said for years that Cal can't coach. He has to have superior talent to win and even then it isn't a given that he wins. We scored enough to win, we just couldn't stop a bunch of B league players from out scoring us.
Then we agree about tonight and needing elite talent. I still can't explain the HC of Kentucky talking so dismissive of Tennessee losses and now wanting to hug it out with Louisville. He's like a guy who had a death scare and is just happy to be alive and loving life. Maybe that happened? But whatever it is--snap out or get out.
I do think he did a better job of coaching earlier this year and then reverted to his preferred style which didn't suit this roster which was extremely midpack/average beyond it's best 2 players as Washington got injured.
If you follow my posts, I've stated that you can't fake your way with talk. Can't say things like "we've got 6th man of year....." when that guy isn't a guy who should be at Kentucky. There are so many things that were stated that were just fake and bluffing and so many bought this team was good because of beating Self/KU. At some point you have to win something. Keion Brooks moment at Arkansas leaps out to me. He ignored Cal repeatedly and was not dealt with. Business as usual.
It's a crossroads. What do they do now? It needs to change and if not, then change is needed.

Who is the guy you don't think needs to be a Kentucky? I certainly hope you are not talking about Mintz. I can think of several players who I would put on that list before Mintz. If the only way that Cal can win is with a bunch of NBA ready players, we don't need him. Cal has shown that his used car salesman approach is no longer working so you can stop fantasizing about getting those players again. Those types of players have handlers and parents that are way too smart to accept the crap that Cal is selling. If UK fans have gotten tired of it, its for certain that AAU coaches have grown tire of it.

Davion Mintz isn't UK caliber. He's a nice guy by all means but at no point should he be getting significant minutes at a program like Kentucky. Creighton improved their program the second he left. Kentucky's results speak for itself. When you rely on mediocre guys, you get results we're seeing.
Nobody says you need all stars everywhere but he's a guy you expect to be on a team you are 20/30 balling in SEC not at Kentucky.

Says who? Cal. How about reading some of the things that are being said by NBA folks? To say that a player such as Mintz isn't good enough to come off the bench for Kentucky tells me all I need to know about the evaluator. I have coached the game for 20 years, so I do know enough about the game to know when someone is trying to blame kids for poor coaching.
This is what I've said from the beginning. Mintz is a 10 minute/game player that should spell a guard and that is it. Last Summer when Matt Jones and his radio co-hosts were wringing their hands about him returning and being a starter, I was AMAZED.
Mintz works hard but is MEDIOCRE. He couldn't even make 2 FT's in a row the last 3 games. When your supposed steady hand guard can't give you all of the little things, why blow him up. just look at what the little white dude from Saint Peters did for his team. Score the last 5 points in regulation to send it to OT. then made EVERY FT he had to seal it.
That little dude outplayed EVERY guard on our team tonight!!! Wonder what he was ranked coming out of High School.
Cal has a problem with keeping his best scorers confident this time of year. Even Booker, Murray, Monk and Herro struggled in their last NCAA Tournament game for UK. WHY has that become a trend????
Can't say that. I'd not have recruited let alone played Mintz. There's a reason some of these guys are around for 6/7 years in CBB and it's not because they are coveted by anyone at the next level.
Creighton was better with his departure-which was in part because he wasn't going to start there any longer. How did UK fare in his 2 yrs? Did he contribute? Sure. I think he had some nice moments but when you recruit/play guys like this, don't be surprised by 9 win seasons and losing to St. Peter's.

Maybe it has been too long since we had a UK caliber player for me to remember what they look like. Please describe a UK caliber player, so that I will know one when I see him. While you are at it, you might want to give Cal a refresher too since he is the one who brought these unworthy players here.

Yep, that's weak and sad. He and he alone is responsible for this sht, and there are several concrete reasons for that, starting with not having these guys prepared mentally to face a team rated over 300...one of the worst teams in the field. Despite that, they outplayed us in every aspect. This, Evansville, etc. Too much mediocrity. He has had a good run here but his ego is too much and impedes his ability to get the mission of winning games accomplished.

We won with those two in spite of Cal. We haven't lost to a superior team in the tournament (in regards to talent based on active NBA players) since Cal has been at UK.

Everyone on that list not named Lamb & Teague lost to teams with less talent. It's insane.
I'll give you Harrow and Askew. Wheeler was "hypothetically" our best option if we actually played modern offense. His ability to drive and dish early in the season to guys like Tyty, Grady and Mintz propelled our play. Late in the season he started shooting 18 footers like Keion and trying to throw it off the top of the backboard.

I watched this Dude coach at Memphis and knew he wasn't a great bench coach. And if there was ANY doubt it disappeared when the WVU game happened in 2010.
Cal didn't know how to run a zone offense. I am sure a HOF coach has figured that out in a decade plus.

By the way, since you are good at listing things, provide the long list of championships that Cal won with those UK caliber players. It doesn't matter how you try to describe it or explain it, or twist things to your liking, it will always look bad on Cal and his apologists.
By the way, Murray St. just made it to the next round without UK caliber players.
