For anyone who has been watching; i think it;s clear that CJ was a huge get for us. The only issue is that we have him for only this year. I would think that finding another guy with size has to be the priority, whether JUCO, grad transfer or Freshman? Doorsan is not quite there and maybe he gets better but I don't want to bank on that?

Any leads?

We have Sa for another year and maybe Doorson and even Diallo can possibly give us some more contributions. Don't forget they have only been working with these guys for a little while now

What still amazes me is that a smaller program (perception-wise) like UNC-Wilmington can get a play like CJ and his BB IQ and we haven't been able to get even close to him in nearly a decade.

You make a good point. I really have no idea but he's contributung nicely right now. We have never had someone his size and you're right, the BB IQ. If he was a little more agile, he could be dangerous. I'm sure he's loving the playing time at RU. Perfect model player for Steves system. We need a post up guy who has touch?", makes the free throws and plays the kind of defense that makes it very difficult to get position.

Doorsan could get better and hopefully he's learning from CJ. Diallo just doesn't have it and doesn't hit his Free Throws so he's a liability out there. I just don't think guys who are inconsistent will get minutes.

Not for nothing, but a lot of D-1 programs passed on Gettys. I saw an article from 2011 that said that Gettys chose UNC Wilmington over Kent State and UNC Greensboro.

IMHO CJ was probably a project coming out of high school and given his speed & athleticism was most likely overlooked. Given his basketball IQ and coaching CJ has, over the last four years, developed his game around his assets.

I'm sure that some of these schools are attractive to players but given Gettys size, I guess it's surprising that he didn't have a few bigger offers.

His game may have improved though over the years. Maybe he was coded as a project back then and he just got better and better?

I'm so glad we have him at least for this year. I'm just thinking ahead and realizing the void next year without him.

I think that Pikell has that personality that attracts a kid like CJ. Not sure what he sees in Bullock just yet but I guess we will find out?

CJG is a great find for this year, however, what he helps to bring out in the rest of the team is the hustle, passion for rebounding, bball IQ, etc. Just look at what Mike Williams is doing under the boards, as well as others. If Doorson, Diallo and Sa have to match up against CJ each day in practice, there may be some light at the end of the tunnel for next year. Regardless, the 'hunt' should be on for another big as our league demands height and rugged players.

If we're gonna get anything from Bullock these are the games in which he needs to get five minutes. That he hasn't suggests that SP is not expecting any contribution.

Good point you made, but look at the kid's BB IQ. The soft touch around the basket. The ability to find the open man. And just his court presence. Now I realize he probably didn't have any of that when he first went to UNC. But whoever coached him, you could easily see the maturation. Even though he's not the most athletic kid and can barely jump, I just love the kid's attitude on the court. I also wish we had him year for one more year. But I do think he will help Doorson.

Will be interesting to see how Gettys develops as we start playing tougher competition. That will be the real story. So far like what he provides to the team.

As for who plays, hard to argue with the 10 rotating thus far. That means that Diallo and Bullock appear to be the odd folks out at this time (imagine saying that 3 years ago!). Diallo used his RS, but Bullok has not. Not sure if he is open to a RS and if that is worthwhile for him.

Wasn't there a fan of UNC-W here that basically bashed Gettys? Maybe he was just a troll.

No, we add a least one maybe two more recruits.
Only one open scholarship next year, unless someone leaves such as Corey.

It will be interesting to see if they target a big or a guard for that spot. I have a feeling it will be a guard in which case Doorson will really need to develop in order for us to get better next year. Gettys will leave a big hole.

If he's healthy, gotta think Diallo could be a serviceable big down the line. Didn't appear to have great hands but he seemed to have some talent and perhaps more upside than Doorson. Take it with a grain of salt, but during Diallo's redshirt year, Eddie Jordan was claiming that Diallo was our best big man then and was a leader (tutoring other players in Calculus, etc.) In a weird way, hoping his total absence from the rotation is health-related and that we can expect him to be productive big man for us. Right now, he's a forgotten man but I do think we'll need him at times during the B1G schedule but definitely next year when Gettys is out of the picture. Doorson is clearly limited physically this year and, whether he's lost weight or not, does not seem to have the same explosiveness/energy.

Not disparaging either player, but Bullock and Diallo are clear choices for the end of the bench right now.

Diallo is healthy but his injury really cost him development wise. Bullock has a way to go from a conditioning standpoint, although he has made great strides.

Injuries are really the only way either see much time this year...but that's just MY opinion.

I'm with you, definitely thought Diallo had more upside and would contribute more than Shaq. Still has time, but surprised he hasn't progressed even w the injury. Bullock I suppose is a good team guy who goes hard in practice and pushes guys. Needs to get in shape AND develop his game...will be a while.

Forget about coming out of high school we got CJ at the last minute this year. It was a very active signing period this year for 5th year guys. And I mean 7 foot is 7 foot I am shocked there weren't other teams interested in him.

CJG's stats were pretty pedestrian. I thought we were going to get little more than five fouls out of him. That he can catch, pass, has a soft touch around the basket and understands the game as well as he does is all a pleasant surprise.

Everyone manage your expectations on Gettys.

I understand the sentiment, and agree to some degree, but we were a 7 win team last year. If CJ is the type of player that won't really help in the Big Ten schedule, well, he is still absolutely helping us get to 10-3 in the OOC, which is a really nice accomplishment in and of itself. We are coming from rock bottom. If CJ can also be an asset against the bottom of the Big Ten, well, then I would say he was a huge help. He doesn't really need to come up big against good Big Ten teams to be an asset to our program.

For better or worse, that's just where we are.

Gettys is terrific as a 5th year Senior. Not sure everyone would be as excited had they watched a kid like him developing On the Banks in years 1-4.

CJ has the ability to post up and the willingness to look for perimeter shooters from the low post. I think/hope Sa will be more valuable come B1G having quicker feet down low stopping penetrators in the paint. The 5th year having been through battles definitely helps CJ though. Also can't overlook energy he brings at home.
