Daton lost 6 to 3 never got close to a takedown. Daton will need to be more aggressive and wrestle better to win.

I think he needs to intiate scrambles and force Gilman to be offensive as Fix can score on scrambles or counters (which he did).

Saying that, it was an extremely close match. Gilmans game plan is to use his defense and strength to prevent Fix's offensive arsenal and wear him down and eek out a close win.

6-3 is close?

Well it was effectively a 4-3 match when Fix tried a desperate jump over at the very end. Fix also had a step out overturned which would have made it 4-4 (although Gilman had criteria) and was awful close to getting a turn on his reversal.

So yes, close, VERY close but I'm sure you know that if you watched the match and know much about FS wrestling...

What a summer for Fix. I don’t think he has anything to hang his head about. He left it all on the mat.

Incredible summer for Daton! Man was all the offense against Gilman in that second match and was in on 5 or 6 shots. That's what senior level strength and defense can do.

Fix gets him next time around. Crazy to think the top two at 57kg could be a FR and So in college as I think Fix and Lee will separate from the rest sooner rather than later.

Gilman needs to enjoy his moments in the sun. The next matchup with the pup will not go any better than it did for Ramos.

Fix is the future.

Congrats to Daton on a great showing at the senior level over the last month. Does he challenge for the Junior World Team spot now?

Haven't seen the matches yet, but I'm guessing they were similar to the first Ramos match. To follow up on what 100TonsofOrangeFury posted, Daton's track record is learning from a match and then making adjustments to win the next time out. He lost to guys like Spencer Lee, Yianni, and Ramos and then beat them the second time around. His wrestling IQ is phenomenal. Remember when he took bronze at Junior Worlds in 2016, then tech'd his way to gold in 2017? This loss will only make him hungrier, which is kind of scary.

Ok, just watched the matches for the first time and osu2082 nailed it.

First match Gilman tried to bully him and it didn't work - two of Daton's best qualities are that he's fearless and relentless. The number of committed attacks was fairly close though, something like 5-3 Daton. In the second match Daton made an adjustment and turned it up, with the number of committed attacks something like 8-1 Daton.

The challenge now will be scoring against that typical Iowa style of wrestling - square stance, hand fight, pull on the head. No doubt he will make the adjustment. And yes, I'm willing to bet on it.

I am a certified OK State homer and I think everyone will acknowledge that. That said, Fix was never "IN" on a shot. The only two takedowns went to Gilman. Will Fix beat Gilman in the future-Sure but he is going to have to penetrate on his feet and overcome superior size and strength. He can't get his patented trap-arm gut if he does not take him down and he was not close yesterday. He also had to learn from wrestling Ramos and he will and his future is unlimited but the better wrestler won yesterday. He might not be the better wrestler in the near future. I like Daton Fix a lot and his entire family but we have to give Gilman his due.
LETS GO POKES!!!

He was "in" on several shots. He may not have been in "deep" but he was certainly in on legs and Gilman had the posture and strength to fight out of those positions.

I think as Fix continues to refine his attacks (already has a pretty impressive arsenal) and closes the gap strength wise he will prove to be the better wrestler. I think that happens sooner rather than later.

Fix is not the best wrestler in the weight yet. But he is "coming". He is close...and I like that he is competing in the Seniors.
Fix vs Lee will be special.

At this point I would pick Fix over Lee in free and vice versa in folk. Long time until March though.

I think I might agree although an argument could be made in the other order. Daton is viewed to be more versatile on his feet in his attacks and a better scrambler. That could be the difference in folk as a turn by Lee wouldn't be as detrimental.

Either way I am really looking to watch these two guys go at it for years to come. Two extremely high level guys at such a young age.

Lee's top abilities especially concern me in folk. I think Daton has the advantage in conditioning and I hope that he has the advantage on his feet. However Daton needs to keep improving on his feet because Gilman beat Daton on his feet. In my opinion Daton has a better chance of beating Lee in freestyle.

Regardless, that match alone should sell out GIA come January. That's what it's all about in my opinion.

Not so sure I agree with that because a turn is worth 4 pts while a takedown is only worth 2. Plus Lee is a pinner. That's the big unknown in folkstyle at this point, right? Will Daton get out from bottom in under a minute, will he limit the scoring to just a riding time point, or will he get turned?

A freestyle match is even more fascinating because of exposure points. Gilman got that takedown in the first period of match #1, then Daton immediately scrambled and exposed him. After that exchange Gilman became gun shy. He has a pretty good single leg to both sides, but he stopped shooting. He went from freestyle to greco by clinging on and trying for underhooks. I think his only other low level shot after that was at the beginning of the second period of match #2. Daton again immediately scrambled and tried to expose him, but Gilman hung on to a leg for dear life (40 seconds before the ref whistled it dead). I don't see Lee shutting it down like that. He isn't as strong as Gilman, but he's more offensive, has better reactions, and he's a better scrambler. I think Daton and Lee will have high scoring, firework type, freestyle matches. And I give Daton a slight edge, with Lee probably having a slight edge in folkstyle. But they are basically toss ups. It's going to be a great rivalry, like if Dake & JB were the same age for college and internationally.

I'm sure this was mentioned before but why did retherford from psu not compete for us trials this year? He's graduated and he would have definitely challenged for it.
