Final Recruit Targets

Morning all,

First, a quick word on what I'm seeing: Holy crap, it took a while to set in, but this Offense is clicking now and it's doing exactly what the Frost style I envisioned is supposed to do. Power running, misdirection, innovative and fast play calling, quick passes, and the constant threat of the QB run. It's a lot for defenses to try to match up against, and its why Oregon, UCF, and now us, are going to put a ton of points on the board. I just don't think there's a good way to stop it.

(Quick note, I ONCE saw Stanford stop a high-powered Oregon offense, and they did it through sheer physical dominance. They somehow matched speed (more or less, because Oregon, at their peak, was just lightning fast) and physically just dominated the Ducks, and that to me seems to be the only way you can stand a chance against an offense like this; speed and brutal, man-handling hits.)

Defensively, we seem to be doing what UCF did: be average at stopping yardage gains, but be excellent at stuffing the run (compared to the pass) and getting as many take-aways as possible so that the offense can get back on the field and do their thing.

It's a new NU, and I'm very happy with what I'm seeing start to take root!

So, lastly, and the original point of this post:

We currently have 20 recruits and are ranked 21st in the country on the 247 site. We seem to be in the market for 25-28 in this class; who is left that we have a realistic shot at?

Huskerboard and Huskermax keep pretty good lists for the recruiting stuff. Looks to be a good number of JUCOs we are wanting.

Hopefully the difference twixt us and Oregon is Frost wants to be far more physical than the Ducks were to prevent the Stanford events from happening.

...and...as with every year, there will be kids flipping later in the game with coaching changes, subpar seasons and just kids being kids in general. One of the Boards I visit had something on how many of the LATE Commits do NOT pan out or transfer and it was a high # of them....so, I guess....fair warning to not get excited about January commits or something.

Is it possible that the Big Ten, by scheduling this game at 11 CST,
is purposefully messing with our recruiting?

Frost said today that most recruits will make it this weekend, but some won't arrive until after kickoff.

I don't believe BIG10 has any say. I think it is the networks, there are not many networks who want to give up a good time slot to a 0, 1, 2 or 3 win team

Last years 'late' commits that did pan out (so far):

Tannor, Washington, Honas, Williams, Martinez. And plenty more to go.

Will Jackson, Canty and Watt are the 'late' commits that didn't qualify or left early, so far.

The only thing that goes into the time slot selection is TV RATINGS. Period. The B1G gets paid humongous bucks for the television rights which in turn funds the B1G conference revenue share to schools. The involved networks are going to make sure they always maximize the revenue they can get from ad dollars so they're going to put the games with the biggest draws in the best slots. That's all they're thinking about.

Martinez is the only one to do anything of note so far. The others seem to at least be on an upward trend. Not nearly enough data on Honas yet. Washington is the classic "good when untouched" to this point. Sure doesn't seem to like the contact yet.

I worry about their names when they commit BUT the last slots filled are going to be heavy on defense. We're in on several 4 star CBs. Some linebackers etc.

I don’t know if I could be in stronger disagreement with your statement. Especially regarding Washington.

Doubtful but if you compared our conference schedule strengths to those of Iowa since we joined the B1G, you might think someone in the B1G hierarchy doesn’t like us ... or loves Iowa.

Ha ha ha, right? Worrying about Washington is an exercise in navel-gazing.

Washington is going to be a star. He's a friggin' freshman and he shows some serious skills, most of which you cannot teach. So, let him gain another 20 pounds of solid muscle and work on technique for a year and lets see how much he torches teams next year.

Once he gets some additional muscle on that frame and ends the ballerina dancing (you're fast, just head north!), he will be more than a handful for opposing Ds.

Every time I see one of his successful runs, I think of Walter Payton. He stiff-arms extremely well, he's not the biggest guy ever, and his running style with those spins and high-step moves is just extremely unique.

Also, it's been said here before, he has so many skills that are purely instinct, not taught. In particular, the way (like Payton) that he slows down his stride in a very confusing way and then cuts hard to throw off pursuing defenders. You can't teach that kind of vision.

We lucked out in both landing him and having him man up and qualify for school here.

As far as future backs, we have 3 technically already in this class. Ronald Tompkins (Duck-R, having second ACL surgery, VERY iffy but if he's healthy he's going to be a great player), Rahmir Johnson (Speed back), and Dedrick Mills (bruiser back). If we pick up a 4th back, I'm guessing they will be some kind of star, because I don't see a massive need there.

Just posted on different thread, but with Ronald Thompkin’s uphill battle making him less of a certainty, and projecting out two years losing Mazour and potentially losing Spielman (early NFL), plus already lost Lindsey, we could take another hybrid guy for sure.

I guess thats a good point. I mean, we have 5-8 spots left in this class. Other than more linemen, I suppose 1 more skill player on O would be a good idea.

If you watch the game replay, there is one view of his arms. I'm pretty amazed at how much bigger his arms looked vs early Sept. They're not huge, but he had very little muscle mass at all in Sept.

Yup! A back like that has no business getting to tank-level size, but if you get Washington to put on 20-25 pounds of solid muscle mass, thats going to make all of the difference in the world to a finesse back like that. His stiff arms will get way more powerful and his leg strength will make him harder to bring down.

That's alright. I'm sure a lot of recruits would rather arrive late than spend 4 hours sitting in 30 degree weather.
