He went 55-41 in the Big 10 and did as good as anyone at Indiana has in the last 25 years. He won 20 games 4 times in a row at UAB (only time that's been done in their history) and took them to the NCAA tournament.

If it's Kenny Payne, it's a bad hire.

5 NCAA's in 12 seasons- including getting him team to the Finals (and got screwed out of an appearances
won 20+ 4 straight seasons at UAB
Did well taking over for Knight considering the circumstances- pretty impossbile situation

The irony here is that we are basically looking at the black version of Stansbury- except that Davis has advanced in the Tourney before

yes, because there was no fallback because of the Bobby Knight situation was there???? Indiana firing a guy that could have been Governor of the state if he wanted probably didnt hurt Davis' recruiting at all did it?

Davis has very little in common with Stansbury as a coach. Rick could recruit to small-town Starkville with very little basketball history and then win with his own players. Davis couldn't win with his own guys consistently.
He also is as exciting as oatmeal, and failed tomaintain eventhe UAB fanbase.
This would be a significant downgrade.</p>

That is the same damn argument that people had for keeping Rick. Winning 20 games isn't what it used to be because it used to mean you were in the tournament. In other words, people would say "he won 20 games" instead of just saying "he got in the tournament" because it was so damn common that one would lead to the other.

I'd rather hear you arguing that he fits the mold that Stricklin outlined in his recent tweet about instilling discipline, etc. And then an argument for his coaching leading to fundamental basketball played with a ton of effort. Last, it would be important to hear about his ability to recruit or hire people who can recruit.

He recruited Georgia well (Jeff Newton, AJ Moye) and help land players like Bracey Wright, Josh Smith (He went pro) and DJ White.

The problem was that once they got on campus, he had no clue what to do with them.

Look, I grew up an IU fan, and followed Mike Davis closely and he was given 6 years, which is way longer than anyone thought that he would be given. The Final four team was led by Jared Jeffries, Dane Fife, Kyle Hornsby, Jeff Newton and AJ Moye. When Davis had to get his own players in there, he struggled.

Also, the reason Davis was hired was to help IU recruit, because Bobby Knight wasn't a good recruiter anymore due to his hatred towards AAU.

Look, Im all for MSU hiring Mike Davis. Couldn't be a better guy for MSU from my perspective since I have probably watched more Mike Davis coached games than anyone on this board.

This is ridiculous. It turns out that Stansbury is better than any alternative. Now we are in the cellar of the SEC with zero light at the end of the tunnel. To be clear, I don't blame Coach34, lars, or any other critics of Stansbury. The fans' role is partly to criticize; otherwise, okay would always be good enough, which it isn't. But the power in our Athletic Department that made this unwise decision is responsible for the cluster17 that is left behind. Pressure is what they are paid to handle well.

I'm just lucky that MSU basketball is not the most important thing in my life. The players, coaches and others directly involved in the program are unfortunately not so lucky.
