I do have concerns as to whether Pikiell will be able to coach up the talent coming in next year to the level of its potential. I am not making any Sweet 16 predictions until I actually see whether the coaching can match up to the talent.

Not convinced we have a viable high-major guard on the roster. Need portal help for Harper who should be the primary ballhandler.
Fernandes was much better than this the past couple years at UMass while playing similar competition to what we’ve seen so far. He may improve.
JMike for me with an entire freshman year under his belt. We'll see how it pans out.
I think Simpson still has a path to figure it out. His role on next years team should be Jacob Young-ish.

Baker shot about 1% above that for his career, got less than 2.5 rpg, and was a sub par on the ball defender, and everyone thought he was great. Difference was he played with better players.
He’s 36.7% from three for his career. Declaring that he can’t shoot based on his 36 attempts this season is absurd.
36.7% from 3 isn't great for a short guard who gets manhandled. All I know is what I see if that's what we get, it's not nearly enough.

He's also pretty good from the line, averages >2.5 stls a game, and had a good assist / turnover ratio. It's fairly obvious what Pike saw in him. He hasn't lived up to his previous performance so far this season.

Cam Spencer shot 43.7%. He had more steals and a better assist to turnover ratio. He also didn't get manhandled on defense. If it's just numbers and that's who he is replacing, it was a poor replacement. I believe Cam left at a bad time so it's hard to really say but maybe Fernandes was brought in as practice fodder and wasn't expected to play this much.

Also, and people get annoyed every time I point this out but I'm going to do it anyway, even entire college career stats are completely inadequate on their own to tell how good a three point shooters someone is. This guy has taken 286 threes in his career. If every shot was identical and had a 1/3 chance to go in then almost HALF the time he'd be <= 31.12% or >= 35.31% after 286 attempts, and the 95% confidence interval for his actual success rate through 286 attempts would span all the way from 27.97% to 38.81%. And this actually understates the variance which is increased when the shots are not identical and the skill level is not constant.
This is completely irrelevant as Pike did not push out Cam in order to get Fernandes. Cam wasn't/isn't an option.
I buy that, but maybe someone better than Fernandes was. He ain't it. If that's the best we could have done in that situation than all good. I'd play the guys who we are going to play next year.
This is not correct. Derek is 35.7% FG% (123 for 345) for his career and only 23.8% from 3P% (20 for 84) for his career. He is 7 for 24 from 3 this season. Small sample size, true.
He has been awesome at the FT line this year, to give props where it is due.

Baker was 32.6% from 3 in his career, almost 9% higher than Simpson's current career 3Pt%. That is a MASSIVE difference.

You really can't be that aggressive if you're slower than the guy guarding you.
Those 3-pt. percentages compare Baker's five year average with Simpson's freshman year plus 11 games - not yet comparable.
Wonder how much the Covid year also impacted his approach to recruiting. Pike seems like the kind of coach who avoids running kids off - something I like and is important (plus I think giving a scholly to Aiden is a great culture move) - but keeping guys around for 5 years from the early classes, before we had success might have hampered him a bit. Not to mention the uncertainty in managing a roster into May, well after the recruits have signed and the portal is barren.
Wrong. You can tell pretty quickly what somebody is or isn’t. Myles Mack (2012) was a fantastic shooter, you could just see it, shot 46% from 3. But that Myles Mack (2014) guy was mediocre at best, shot 32%.
That's fair. Baker's percentages did fall off his last three years when he was the main man after being more of a complementary player (albeit with a lot of minutes) his first two. I think some of that drop-off was the ball ending up in Baker's hands late in the shot clock, forcing to make something happen. I wonder who has the advanced analytics that say how guys shoot early or late in the shot clock or at the end of a half when just heaving up a desperation bomb.
My biggest concern with Simpson might be he doesn't look like he went through an offseason with the S&C guys to add some muscle to his frame. Hopefully that 0-12 stretch from deep was just a slump and he will continue to break out of it tonight. He is the guy I want on the FT line for us late in a close game.

Great performances by both Simpson and Fernandes tonight. Too bad Ohio State was red hot in the first half. On to Iowa.

They made shots. Thats it. They didnt make players around them better. They werent great on D. They knocked down shots that so far have been low percentage looks.
There was one guy that really had a meaningful impact on the game. In a net positive way
They (noah and derek) did help out on the boards….which helped eliminated the defensive rebounding problem. Credit to them there

He knocked down step back 3s, didnt look for others and was pretty poor defensively.
First game Fernandes actually looked similar to what I expected. Looks like he lost some weight and toned up a little from the first game as well
