Feeding the post

It seems like this has resulted in a lot of the turnovers so far this year. Too many high passes getting tipped from behind or to the wrong shoulder or hip resulting in steals. Very few bounce passes with the exception of KF and off the pick and roll. That's where KF excels over the other guards on the team. She rarely makes these mistakes which explains her excellent 3-1 A/TO rate. If you're wondering why Jan loves having her out there, that along with her defense is why.

Doesn't seem like they're turning it over trying to feed the post as much as last year to me. Seems like it's there but they wait a little too long to pass it a lot times.

CC was a master at feeding the post..actually she was a master at many things bb wise

Definitely not close to as bad as last season. Weird OP unless he didn't watch last year.

I didn't watch much last year and wasn't drawing a comparison to last year. Overall the team is turning it over at almost the same rate per game, (15.1 vs 16.1), so any real improvement that you've seen has probably been minimal. My only point was that KF probably makes as many or more post feeds as anyone else on the team and her turnover rate is a fraction of the others.

Addie Deal is by far our best post feeder. Her turnovers have mainly been poor decisions with her dribble or traveling calls. That should improve.

Pretty strong claim given that she only has a grand total of 4 assists over the last 5 games and I'm not sure how many of those 4, if any, were post feeds. 🤔 KF had 5 against Oregon with zero turnovers.

Now last night they had several bad passes trying to feed the post. The whole offense kinda went into limp mode after getting a big lead. Alot of standing around. Thankfully they held on

You are correct but that’s my story and I’m sticking to it 🤓. I trust time to be on my side.

Last night was deja vu. That's how bad they were last year even against teams not defending the post hard. Lazy careless passes.

A TO feeding the post and a player missing an easy shot inside generally work out about the same result.
Generally, although live ball turnovers from bad passes prevent the opportunity to even get a shot off, and often result in opponents scoring fast break points.

In any case, turnovers are not the same as missed shots and are accounted for separately for a reason.

It's understandable because Heiden and Hanna are arguably our best players but....I agree with the forcing it into the paint critique. They have to be more patient and move the ball around and get in when it's there. Simply forcing it too much....gotta work for it as bit.

This team's ability to move to the next level is directly tied to taking care of the ball. There has been too much standing around trying to force feed the post the past few games. Also the guards struggling with ball handling/ball security. McCabe needs to dial in her shot as well, that is what she is needed for and she has been way off.

They need to remember that if the post isn't open, they can reverse the damn ball and let the post try to re-seal.

And STOP the damn lob passes when the help side can clearly get there in time.... Way to much forcing the lobs. I'd yell at our post and tell her to actually try sealing again, not just put your hand up for a lob, because the defender got around you

The only real issue I've seen is when forcing the lob over the top when the defender fronts. That's a hard touch pass.

After throwing the ball away on lobs multiple times when our bigs had the defender pinned, I would think our coaches (and players) would realize they could probably take 1-2 passes to the wing. From that improved angle, with the defender still being pinned high, there should be an easier pass more towards the high blocks compared to the slow lob.

I coached basketball for 40 years. We use to tell our guards, wings if they see more than 2 hands playing defense not to throw it in....just count hands. Iowa has a tendency to throw it into a crowd. IMO. The count hands thing was effective and an easy way to teach it.

MSU had 2 sometimes 3 defenders in the paint. Can’t force it in there with that. Move the ball and get some space.
There was one play where Hays was literally surrounded by 3 players 10 feet from the basket. Deal saw that and decided it was a good idea to toss it up for grabs. Nothing good was going to happen there even in the unlikely event that Hays caught the pass which of course she didn't, resulting in a fast break score for MSU.

Our two best offensive performers are interior or post players Ava and Hannah. We know this and our opponents most assuredly know this. We are not going to beat good teams by out gunning them from the perimeter. Granted some of our interior feeds were ill advised but we cannot abandon this as our first option. This is who we are at this time. Our bigs work hard at trying to present good targets. In some cases the perimeter players need to exercise more patience for an opportunity. Ball movement is often a key.
