Hey guys

Wanted to share a video feature we just finished here at UAB. It's with coach Polk and is about his legacy as a coach and his time he has donated volunteering here at UAB. Please give it a watch if you feel so inclined and share with our fellow Bulldogs. Thanks in advance and Hail State

Excuse me if it’s mentioned in the video as I can’t watch it right now due to the screaming pigs, but what is the reason he landed at UAB? It seems such an odd destination for him in my eyes.

He had already bought a house in Birmingham so he could hand deliver his typed grievances to the league office every morning.

Coach Polk has been the volunteer assistant under his good friend Brian Shoop for about 10 years now. Whereas volunteers usually get paid through camps and donor funds, Ron donates every dime he would make. He said with travel and rent in Birmingham he spends about 21k a year. Goes to a ton of baseball banquets each year as well. Says he usually does it for free and sells some of his books to pay for gas. To say he is one of a kind is an understatement

this wasnt intended to be an insult. interesting it was perceived that way.

Yeah, I was kinda wondering that myself. He definitely has the demeanor of a bulldog, which I would consider a compliment.

Give Ron a cigar and a derby, he could pass for the British Bulldog.

Each typed letter is hand delivered in person and he gets in the commissioners grill and kicks dirt on his feet.

Make no mistake, I actually choose to remember the good about Ron Polk. I don't agree with the way he left or the ****-kicking fit he threw on his way out, but if his face isn't on the Bulldog Baseball Mount Rushmore, no one's should be.

On a lighter note, he could come back to Starkville as a spot-on mascot without even wearing the costume.

How in the world do 3 people down vote the Polk typewriter?

Many years ago when working in the athletic dept I got a call from coach Polk. When I got to his office he said my typewriter (an IBM just like the one in the video) won't work anymore could I fix it? I opened the cover and there was a dead mouse inside he had beaten to death typing. Oh hell he said. How do you suppose that got there. I got the mouse out and he went back to typing. I'm behind on my recruiting cards he said.

He typed recruits on index cards and mailed them to them.

Does anyone know if he still owns his place here?

That was pretty good. Seems to have mellowed a good bit as mentioned in the video. I assume this mellowing is also part of why he seems to be on much better terms with our athletic department as well. I am certainly glad for it, you can’t tell the MSU baseball story without Polk being prominently mentioned.

Clearly he'd heard clicking on the..

..mouse made office work go quicker so he was giving it a try.

You know this kind of role is just right for him. He can coach baseball without having to worry about recruiting. That was where the game passed him by because he refused to change.

I believe he said on IB’s podcast a few weeks ago that he still had his place in Starkville and that is where he’ll retire to when he finally hangs it up at UAB.
