She was pure class. Just a good person. We don't have people like her in entertainment anymore. Now we have activists.

She had an amazing career , came from nothing and what a success she was. She was the epitome of the American dream . May she RIP

The good old days when real comedy was allowed. We’re not permitted to banter like that anymore in comedic interactions like that or in your personal life.
I think the story is that Dolly agreed with your co-worker.
I think Dolly gave Whitney the rights to that song.

Depending on your definition of activist, and the rights someone champions for others, she could be considered an activist ( in a good way IMHO ).

This doesn’t touch on the statement released by Trout Unlimited and other organizations as well. Among other things, she was a good hearted activist. She covered a lot of ground.

- While on vacation in County Kerry, Dolly Parton stopped by the traditional local pub.
- Musician and guitarist Steve Cooney recognized her and started playing her classic song "Coat of Many Colors".
- He invited her to the stage, and she joyfully sang along with the band for an awestruck local crowd.
- Pub owner and legendary Gaelic football player Páidí Ó Sé welcomed her and presented her with an unwashed Kerry team jersey from their 1985 All-Ireland victory, which she accepted with great humor.
- Playfully calling the area "Dinglewood," her warm and casual interaction became a beloved piece of local and musical history
But the point is dolly was such a generous person and someone who appreciated talent that she gave Whitney the song and very likely would have said Whitney version was better

The point was obviously in the first sentence, who in the world could have a negative comment about Dolly Parton. And then trying to justify it by saying in their opinion, the other person’s version of a song was better. Anyone who comes off, saying that she wasn’t a fantastic person from the onset means the rest of their statement should be disqualified.

Random observation about music from the board’s token deaf guy: Dolly Parton wrote “I Will Always Love You” and “Jolene” on the same day.
I saw an interview of Dolly in which she was asked about the song. She had absolutely no jealousy about the popularity of the Whitney version, adding she felt it was a beautiful rendition. Apparently in the past, Whitney had sometimes been defensive in having it compared to the original and would say it's "my record". Dolly agreed, saying that was Whitney's record but it was "my song and it made me a lot of money".
Always joking about her physical blessings she said "I have little feet because nothing grows in the shade." RIP
Dolly wisely never gave the rights away. She made a fortune off of the royalties from Whitney's recording.
Right after it became a number 1 country hit in the early '70's, Elvis wanted to record it. Being a big Elvis fan, she was excited for him to record one of her songs but Colonel Tom Parker demanded 50% of the publishing rights. She refused and Elvis never recorded it.

I appreciate your response. Out of respect for Dolly Parton I choose not to reply to the OP. Let's just agree that maybe "activists" have some good reasons to be "active" these days. There should not be any negative connotation to the term. She was an "activist" in a very, very good way.

I think another lesson to take from the loss of both Dolly and Tim Curry is that neither of them took themselves seriously but they took the work dead serious that's the most important thing pour all of yourself into the craft but have fun and don't get an ego.

Dollywood was an entertaining place with lots of other stuff to do nearby.
Years ago I was in Gatlinburg for a wedding and we all went to a bar afterwards and Dolly walked in. I didn’t get to meet her but she was happily taking pictures and talking with fans. No hint of pretentiousness or irritation, just hanging out and smiling and being friendly to everyone.
