Fathering your kids

If you are a diehard UK fan and your son doesn't pick up on that, you've probably done something wrong along the way. My family lives in Southern Indiana and my kids are too young to really get the whole BBN thing, but they proudly tell all of their friends we are Kentucky fans and randomly yell Go Big Blue! because we yell it together during games.

I live & work in the heart of Iowa Hawkeye country. My daughter only cheers for UK. She draws me pictures of UK themed stuff. Even when all of her friends are wearing black & gold, she chooses blue & white. [cheers] to you for raising them right.

sometimes though -no matter how well you raise them, or how strongly you indoctrinate them, they turn on you. Sometimes they are so strong willed, they'll choose to support a different team just to defy you, then are too stubborn to admit it when they are wrong.

If this happens, they must be snuffed out. I think it is in the book of Leviticus.

If I had a kid that had a UK offer but decided to go to IU,, UL,, UT,, Duke,, UNC,, Arkansas,, Uconn,, KU,, UF,, Cincinnati,, or USCjr.. I'd tell him to not bothering to come back home again.. Ever.. Because that right there would be great parenting.. Or it could be failed parenting because my kid should have been raised to go to UK if offered and nobody else..

When is it acceptable for your kid to attend a school other than UK? If I have a son that is being recruited by Kentucky and he doesn't want to go to school there then he has something to learn about being from Kentucky.

Obviously if your kid isn't being recruited by UK its a different story, but what about other sports like football or women's basketball?

Not for nothing, but if every parent had this thought process, Kentucky would have peaked in the 90's, and might be a non-factor today. Willis and Hawkins would be our best players right now.

It's never been a problem to take kids from all over the country and put them on our basketball team. Has to work both ways.

Just because you're a UK Fan doesn't mean you should force your kids to attend UK,My youngest Son has a 4.0 GPA,is a sophmore in High School taking duel credit classes already (College and High School credits,is ranked in the top 3 percentile in the country in 5 subjects,but wants to be an Aero Space Engineer,UK has a fine Engineering College,I went there,but does not have AeroSpace Program,so he will attend a different school,one of the top rated in that area if I can afford it or he gets a Merit scholarship.
My oldest son is a LSU Grad because that is what fit his needs,we are all UK Fans,bt you have to get an education at whichever school suits your goals.
If your son was offered a Football Scholarship from Alabama would you force him to play at UK?

My daughter had a choice to either go to UK or Loserville for medical school I finally talked her into UK but if she had picked Prostitute U I would have supported her but man it would have been tuff.

Agree. Because as everyone knows, the academic program is the equivalent of their sports programs. Good call really and not a tuff call.

I think parents ABSOLUTELY need to be involved in the decision. There are a lot of lying, slick talking coaches out there that can put things in a kids head . If my son was a basketball player I wouldn't want Johnny Jones developing his skills . I'm sure Pitino is telling recruits he will still be there and we know Roy Williams is telling recruits that nothing will come of their scandal . Do we know if these are true statements ? Suppose a kid is being recruited by Tenn. football and and his " host" is the hottest girl on campus that acts like the two of them have a future ? You can't make the decision for them , but they definitely need guidance. And fandom should not be a determining factor.

Maybe I should have noted men's basketball. Or perhaps I thought since this was the men's basketball forum it would be assumed that's what I was referring to. Let your sons read it for you if you can't understand

I would also question my son if in fact he did not bang the hottest girl on campus

I still don't feel we went after him in the manner Duke did or he would be here. Duke was taking lots of visits there, IMSC, Cal didn't.

I wouldn't mind my son going elsewhere as long as it was in his best interest but he damn well better remain a huge UK fan or I'll forget I had a son.

Your kid's future is all that should concern you. If you had to choose between a scholarship offer from Harvard or UK what you tell your daughter or son? I think if the she/he is motivated it doesn't matter where they go because they would be outstanding in any environment. However, in this era, grad school can make a difference. When I hire I generally disregard the institution where the bachelors was obtained but I do look at the institution where the MBA, Masters or other advanced degree was obtained. This may sound discriminatory but its the way of the business world. A kid from UK with an MBA versus a kid from Harvard with an MBA is out of balance. Again an however; the kid from UK with an MBA may stay with you long after the kid from Harvard with an MBA. Yada, yada. I'm lucky enough to be in a position to hire these types of kids. Good luck. You're lucky enough to be put into a position to make this decision. GO BIG BLUE!!!

The biggest decision a person will make in their life is when they have kids.
You have 9 months to figure it out, and when the big day comes, your decision starts;
Am I going to be his/her friend or their parent?

Moral of all this:
If your their friend, they choose UL, IU, Duke, it will probably make you mad.
If you are their parent all these years, you support them no matter what.

Know the OP meant b'ball, but had a son who was a pretty good H.S. football player who was getting serious interest from not only UK, but all the SEC schools as well as others. Had a number of scholarship offers by his Jr. year. Told him that he could pick whichever he wanted...what was best for him. His dream schools were Bama or UGA. But he blew out his knee and achilles so it became a moot point. But I would have been behind him no matter.

Louisville sucks anyway you turn it,but Duke is one of the Top Universities in the country education wise,I guess if your kid is talented enough to get a pro career you could not put as much emphasis on education,but a good education always pays off if its in a good field

Thanks for the input. I was looking for sports outside of men's basketball because we are so good and going to Kentucky is likely a top option.

If it would have gotten to that point, the decision would have been up to him. Whatever he was comfortable with. Now if I would have thought that certain coaches weren't on the up and up with him, or the situation just would have been bad (total lack of PT, or chance thereof) I might have intervened more. But like I said his two top picks were Bama and UGA...so I don't think he could have picked wrong. But, his career ended before he got to that.
