Please. Crime statistics are notoriously ambiguous as it is. I think the only thing that's cooking is the oven in the spin kitchen. And maybe BLS offices.
With that said, I just arrived in DC this morning (I come up from Lexington, VA for a few days most weeks), and here's my report.
1. Interestingly, on the local radio drive in, the coverage is not at all histrionic, and there are just as many 'man on the street' clips of DC natives who are happy with it as there are of politicians bemoaning it. Naturally, the local Arlington news site is leading with about 5 stories bemoaning it.
2. Obviously it's early in the day, but no materially noticeable increased presence on Metro or the streets, unless perhaps you count the MPD cop who usually stands in the lobby of WaPo all day who seems to have strolled outside and down to the end of the block. But maybe he's just going for some breakfast..
