The defensive game against us this year is simple, load the box and get after the qb. If our oline can play well then i say Gebbia because he is older and maybe the more pure passer. If our oline continues to struggle We need Martinez who would potentially be able to escape and get yards

My biggest fear is Cole Conrad at center. We took a step down in talent when Decker left.

Conrad is decent. Knows the offense. He just isn't a really dominant player. Can hold his own against most guys, but against tougher talent he is neutralized easily

Hopefully he made significant strides in the weight room as well.

After all the Boe Wilson talk over the last couple of years, I’m surprised that Farmer isn’t at Center and Wilson at guard. Wilson seems to be talked up so much but just can’t break through.

Still better than anyone named Pelini or Caputo.
But I do agree with you.

How does Conrad know this offense? You mean just as much as anyone else currently on the team?

Wasn't Wilson mentioned as a center prospect when he first came aboard?

A couple things for me on the O line that have driven me nuts the past few years:
1. Sustain a block, don't just hit and slide off, keep a good perspective with your feet and hands
2. Know when someone is coming on a stunt or blitz, we have been terrible about picking those up, poor communication on the slide down, step out, hand off, etc.

Of the power 5 games we play only Illinois and Minnesota won’t have returning starters at QB. It is going to be a long season if we don’t have anything beyond a “game manager” at QB.

In games between teams with comparable talent, wins and losses are determined by QB play.

The Colorado game will tell us a lot. They have a pretty good QB returning. Nearly 3000 yards - 60% completion - 2:1 TD to INT ratio

Yes- when I used “capable” I would clarify the only capable thing for me is a gamer. Doesnt need to win a Heisman this year but simple game management is not the standard and would not be “capable”.

As for the O-line, I can only say “Cavanaugh”. Let’s see what Austin can mold with his clay.

Interesting, and probably correct, at least early on.. Load the box and see if whomever is back there can sling it and beat you.

Longer term, I'm not sure that is going to be the opponent's strategy. I think most teams will try to not give up the big play and to make us march the entire field.

Flirting with long runs and big pass plays with that kind of D against the Frost spread. This O takes advantage of speed and putting you in a bind with who you are going to cover. Consistently going with load the box just allows you to go over the top easier or break a long one with a small crease. A good strategy from time to time but I would think not consistent against a team that gets you spread out with 4-5 split out with lots of one on one. Get the ball out quick with speed.

They can try, but not sure if it will work out too well for them. Gbr

From your lips to their DC's ear. With all the weapons we have and with Frost's schemes we will slice and dice that to pieces.

It's takes near wretched QB play to not take advantage of that in this system and even with poor QB play Frost's methods will still beat most teams on our schedule if they do that.

Give Leach, Kelly, Frost, etc., 2/2.5 seconds and they will back you out of that idea. Situationally, that could always be a good idea but won't work as a game plan for anyone but the very best defenses.

In other words, we'll take what we want?

I will take it a step further. IMO, I think Frost has been able to gauge his skill talent and now realizes his offense could be really potent sooner rather than later if the QB position gets settled.
I agree. Just because this team wasn't coached very well doesn't mean there isn't talent & I believe Frost knows that.

With all of Riley's faults he did leave good talent here. Frost has done a good job filling in some gaps with Jucos and getting ours players in better physical condition.

But with new/young QB play, a new system and a tough schedule we'll still see 4-5 losses this season.

Quite possibly you're right. With this schedule and it being year one, 4 - 5 losses is ok for me.

My guess is that the Oline play (including TEs) is even a bigger variable than our freshmen qbs. A "good" (not great) Oline would be a sensational improvement but I'm clueless how long that will take to achieve. But if somehow HCSF & staff have magic wands we're gonna be rough sledding for our opponents.
