Riley is 100% correct.
If this isn't a rule more teams would just do this every time. Throw it up, PI.
Agree. Throw it away from your opponents sideline (so they cannot alert the cover man) and to a place where the returner cannot get there. Exactly what Purdue did. Hell that pass went further than his shank.

I’m aware of the rule and the coaches I watched the game with agreed it was a bad call. Pretty sure my crew would not have called it in that situation. I think Riley is right.

I didn't know you officiated. What levels/conference do you do?

Wait-the officials told Riley it didn't look like a fake punt to them? What the heck is that supposed to mean? What is a fake punt by their definition? I'd be shocked though if the league office says the officials did anything wrong on the play-it would mean they might just have to admit that officials are something other than perfect.

Big Ten officials seem to have different interpretations of the rules every week. What an outstanding group of individuals.

I don't want to get started too much on the officiating, or else I'm liable to write a 20-page dissertation. Another play that baffled me was the final play of the game. Obviously it didn't end up mattering, but if something crazy happened and Purdue actually scored or a penalty was called (not terribly crazy actually), I would be interested to see what happened. What interested me was the second pitch by Purdue, to the runner who ended up going out of bounds. It was clearly a forward pass. I thought it looked like one live, and watching numerous replays, it was clearly a forward pass. If you look at the players position when he lets go, and the other player's position when he catches it, you can clearly see he is further upfield. Not to mention, basic physics shows it would have traveled forward, just based on the motion of the passer and his arm. The thing that gets me is there is a ref standing almost directly to the side of this whole thing, with a perfect view of the play, and he appears to indicate that everything was okay, or at least he doesn't throw a flag. It was a fitting ending, I guess, to a horribly officiated game.

And there was a targeting on Newby or Young on the peel back block on the last play. That kid shouild not be playing next week. Did not see the forward lateral, will look.

That rule is VERY subjective. How high and how long does it have to be??

was thinking the exact same thing on the "forward pass".......waiting for a flag after that......shocked to see no flag and the play still going. Obvious call to make IMO.

You talking about the 2nd one where the clock kept running? Looked like his knee was definitely down in bounds.
I believe you are right. First time Zig got out with great effort, second time just couldnt get there.

If I remember correctly this was the play we must have subbed after allowing them to as well, with the clock running and the ref standing over the ball.

Aren’t most of them though?

Yeah but I'm speaking more for rules that are based on what one thinks looks like a pass. Obviously it looked like a pass, he passed the ball. What it did was simulate a punt and the rule is in place to prevent what happened last night from happening yet it happened. Hard to argue against something like PI but this fake punt deal can be argued.
