What stands out to me is how much crisper and smoother everything flows compared to last year’s Arkansas, Kentucky, and Vandy games. These last two weeks have “looked” more like 2015-2019 WSU than anything we’ve seen to this point.

Leach says execution is better but still a ways off. These past six games of the season (once we get by Bama) could be fun if we keep progressing.

Thanks for posting. When Leach was asked about Will's improvement he said it was due to everyone else around Will improving, the OL, and WR routes. I actually like the timing of the off week. Marks and Johnson have been dinged up. It will be good to see them healthy when they play against Alabama. It will also give us time to work on the issues Leach saw during the TAM game.

I am convinced Polk and Calvin were the biggest additions this off season listening to how Leach talks about them. Not just for this year, but for future teams as well. According to Leach they know how to put in the work to reach their potential. Those comments also seem to be targeted at our younger receivers to step up and pay attention.

Lashley was also a massive addition. A solid contributor to help stabilize the Oline.

All that plus getting these guys experience in this system is looking to finally payoff. I agree, after Bama we should have some fun.

I don’t know how many watched the postgame on SEC Network but Chizik made a good point that to really get this offense going takes reps and they basically had no reps going into last season and now you’re finally seeing the offense flow better because of just time and practice.

Reps are the key in this offense. Everywhere Leach goes, his offenses get better and better the longer he is there. This nonsense about the air raid getting “figured out” is laughable considering Leach had his two best offenses at WSU just a couple of years ago- which was years 7-8 of Pac 12 DCs game planning against it.

It’s never as bad as it seems after a loss, and it’s never as good as it seems after a win. This offense still needs to get better and has a lot of room to grow, but that should excite people because we do good things now.

I struggle with this because the lack of reps didnt seem to be an issue in the LSU game last year.

A&M is a very mediocre football team with a terrible QB right now. Their defense is still an above average SEC defense with a lot of talent.

But yes- Kentucky, Arkansas, and Auburn will be good litmus tests for our offense.

I'm looking forward to the UK and Arky games. You are right about A&M but their offense is the problem. Even after our game their defense is only giving up 12.6 points a game. That is better than Bummer. Will the A&M/Bummer game be a defensive battle? I don't think so. I think Bummer will score often due to the lack of offense by A&M.

My gut tells me that Costello really was an outstanding college quarterback, and something just went very wrong physically soon after the LSU game. The physical may have turned mental. But I feel sure there was more going on there than just him not being able to quarterback against a zone defense.

There is no doubt he reinjured that shoulder in the Arkansas game. He was never the same afterwards. I remember in the Kentucky game he could barely throw a 10 yard pass.

I think what Leach means is more reps recognizing whether its zone or man coverage and then what to do. LSU played man almost the whole game last year (Thanks Bo Pelini). If you watch Matt Wyatt's breakdown vs. A&M you'll see that our WRs are learning how to read coverages even when defenses try to disguise them. That takes time. Our WRs are not stupid. You can see numerous times A&M shows man coverage but then at the snap jumps into zone and our guys know to break off routes and find grass. Well coached in my opinion.

Any QB can read man-to-man and see which guy is winning his route, and a good passer can put it on the right WR. That's what we all saw vs LSU. But when playing zones, both QB and WR have to read the defense and find the open spot, and sometimes the QB has to anticipate that spot and trust that his WR will be there on time - they have to be on the same page. I think that's where the reps make a huge difference (and where we failed last year, especially mid-season, but started showing a little progress late).

I thought that too and bought in to the Mike Elko knows what he's doing bit...but after watching Matt's film breakdown, they looked confused a lot.

Games against Kent, Colorado, and New Mexico will do that for your defensive stats early in the season. I'll be surprised if Bama doesn't put up 40 tomorrow.

Not sure what to make of Costello, but our WRs were crap early last year vs those drop 8 zones. It’s like night & day watching them understand how to get open and not keep running straight into coverage.

No doubt reps are key. If you combine that with talent on the level of other top teams, this offense absolutely works well. 2017 and 2018 were good years at WSU and they had Luke Falk and Gardner Minshew at QB. Both talented enough to play in the NFL.

And Rogers is probably farther along than either of them were as a sophomore. ETA actually Falk was pretty damn good every year he was in this offense and Minshew was at East Carolina, so I'll just say I hope Will ends up near their level at some point.
