Myles missed practices routinely due to his class schedule. Not many p5 coaches other than pike are letting that happen.

I’m sure ucla wasn’t going for it.

now what if a full team was trying to be that “scholar athlete?” when does a coach say enough is enough. My guess is if we had even one more scholarship guy missing practices due to class schedules, there would have been some serious talks 😂

and again, coach Pikiell is one of the most genuine in the game. But at the end of the day he’s getting paid a lot of money for the basketball team to win games, not get good grades.
Quite a few years ago, an Ohio State coach called out their then star RB Robert Smith for missing a practice to go to class (he was pre-med, I believe).

Fair market value is something someone is willing to pay. That's it. If I were an athlete now the cat is out of the bag. I wouldn't settle for someone making up some arbitrary number.

Most industries do have rules in place though to ensure that one individual (or a small group of individuals) cannot become market makers. That’s why there’s a chance this could head to direct employment arrangements with the schools which would unlimately result in more oversight. Once the athletes are employees of the schools, the next step would be budget caps. In the end, money talks at all levels and a cap would benefit the teams that matter most in the long run. SMU and Miami boosters can buy players but at the end of the day winning doesn’t buy them Michigan / USC / OSU / ND style national following and the folks that matter want the blue bloods to win which is basically guaranteed as long as other boosters don’t outbid theirs.

What would be a really interesting twist would be if they set up university cap limits based on the total number of student athletes enrolled on scholarship. That would be the most sure fire way to save Olympic sports. Let’s say money could be allocated per student athlete as a school sees fit - but the salary budget limit could total no more in aggregate than $100k per scholarship player. That would be a sure fire way to save Olympic sports. Want more budget to pay football and basketball players? Add more Olympic sports.
