ESPN Bubble Watch: Rutgers "Should be in"

via ESPN: The Scarlet Knights earned the Quad 1 win they so badly needed, defeating Maryland 78-67 at home. Yes, at home is where all of the Rutgers victories occur (well, plus one at Nebraska), and it appears this is going to be a winning strategy. Steve Pikiell's men are now assured of a regular-season finish no worse than 19-12 to go along with a .500 record (or better) in Big Ten play. To put that in perspective, Rutgers hasn't finished .500 or above in conference play since Gary Waters led the program to an 8-8 finish in the 2002 Big East. Making school history plus a persistently eye-catching NET ranking in the 30s look like they will get the job done for the Knights in the committee room.

I was feeling more confident yesterday. I'm still seeing us on the edge with a lot of bracketologists. If we lose the next two and there are a handful of tournament upsets in the A-10, MWC, Pac12, etc. its going to be tenuous.

It really would be nice to win on Saturday and go into the B1G Tournament with nothing to lose.

"Should Be In" to me implies that we should be in regardless of whether we win another game or not. However, you'll find this stuff changes often depending on how other bubble team are doing and perception. The goal needs to be to take this out of the committee's hands and keep winning. I've lived long enough to know I will not feel entirely comfortable even if we beat Purdue and there's always a few teams that get royally screwed. We have to keep it going.

Gasaway has done a great job doing this for the last month once a week and over the last week every day or every other day. Gives his reasons and has sound logic. We have been in the Should be in column for the last month and now he is confirming because almost 90 + percent of the Bracketologists have us in.
Take a look at the bubble . It is as weak as can be with every team with multiple flaws and we have only 1 . The concern are the bid stealers in the SoCon and MIssouri Valley that shrinks the bubble so root for E. tenn State and Northern Iowa to win their tourneys as much as you root for us to beat Purdue. Their tourneys are underway.

the road mark is a flaw...and until its fixed its an issue, that is why we are not locked in. When you have a flaw you give the committee a reason to point to. I have seen the committee pull a head scratcher almost every year...except last year

Bubble teams Stanford and Wichita State lost last night. Utah State won. ASU also dropped their 3rd straight which moves them down toward the bubble and also doesn't hurt in the Cliff Omoruyi sweepstakes.

Beating Purdue serves two purposes given that they are a likely competitor for one of the last at large berths from the BiG. Knocks them out and finalizes our seat.

Who knows how deep the committee will dig in to our resume when looking at our road record, but for this board's consideration and edification:

We have played our B1G road games against the teams (today) in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 13th place in the league standings. We've lost ONE of those games by double digits (@MSU by 12)
