Epitome of our problems

Saw several tweets from former players over the weekend saying this team/coaching staff is soft. That is my general impression as well. One strong example of this is us getting flagged twice for illegal motion because the WR had not gotten set by the time of the snap. Not that the WR moved early, or was in motion and had not gotten set... the WR simply had not run to his spot and gotten set before the snap. It was just a case of lazily running out to his spot. Somebody feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about that.

I've watched a lot of football and can't remember that occurring, much less twice. On well-coached teams, the WR would have gotten his butt reamed out for that (or at least he would've been corrected). It should never happen once, let alone twice. What's interesting is, the second time it happened the camera showed our Center chewing the WR out. It is seemingly up to the players themselves to get their teammates heads on straight.

Good football coaches teach precision and discipline, and that means that mistakes don't go unnoticed and uncorrected. The best coaches notice the tiniest of mistakes and make sure they get cleaned up. Our coaching staff doesn't seem to be capable of either.

The sad part is he constantly talks about preparation and precision and those are two of the things we suck at the most. Tells me he is incapable of doing what he wants to do.

It did happen twice. Once with Stevens and Once with Shrader. I didn't think the receiver was loafing. I was more upset at the QB's for not making sure everyone was set. It's clear we didn't work on tempo in practice enough.

JoMo loves quotes. Here's one from Albert Einstein, "the definition of genius is taking the complex and making it simple". Football is a simple game. JoMo makes it way too hard.

Here's another one, "It's not what you know, it's what you get your players to know." Our guys are out there thinking way too much. Just call some damn plays and play football.

The interception that Shrader threw was also the fault of the WR (Zuber) not running his route 100%. They broke the film down at halftime on SECN. Zuber ran a clear out route. Thomas was wide open, but Zuber slacked off and allowed the DB who was covering him to come off of Zuber and easily pick off the pass thrown to Washington.

But then again, Joe says he shouldn't have to coach effort, so I wouldn't expect us to get any better.

That's what I was thinking. Maybe they were a little slow, but the QB should make sure everyone is set before the play. I was bitching about Stevens doing it ... then Shrader did it and I was at a loss for words.

Same. 2 different QB's to make such a Pee Wee football error was a little mind-blowing. Unfortunately it all comes back to the Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator.

As I recall those two penalties were the two times we tried to run a quick snap count instead of checking with the sideline. The WR was probably not set because he was accustomed to having 10-15 seconds to kill at the line of scrimmage.

We do indeed lack toughness and unfortunately there isn't a whole lot that can be done about that right now. Toughness is a cultivated slowly over time on the practice field in the spring, in August training camp, in off season conditioning and in the weight room.

Yeah, I think y'all are right, it was more on the QBs. Still something that can't happen and a sign of bad coaching.

You are exactly right, no quick fix. That was the gist of the player's tweets I mentioned. Disappointment that they had worked so hard to build up a culture of discipline and toughness, and now that was gone.

I can trace 100% of our problems to lack of discipline. It's been on display since Joe's first game, where we got like 50 penalties.

I mean clearly there's a huge difference between being a coordinator in the Big 10/HC at Fordham and running an SEC West team out of MS. Mullen's experience in the SEC was surely a benefit in his transition. And Mullen's strong attention to detail is a key trait for a successful head coach.

If you have to coach effort at this level you recruited the wrong kids. You do have to coach details and technique and being precise in everything. You have to create competition to keep them hungry and trying to improve their skills. These penalties are a sure sign of no attention to detail and general laziness

Yeah I don't know how we can expect any of the offensive players to play with tempo when we've been nothing but hurry up and wait for a year and a half.

Agreed. My point is, big ten level coaches should not be option A to run an secw program.

Mullen coached relentless effort at MSU for a reason and he's doing the same at UF for a reason. Every successful coach coaches effort. That's how you get the most of out people. less than 1% of folks can get the most out of themselves. Usually it takes someone else you respect demanding you give you're absolute best effort. That's life in general not just sports.

There’s something almost comical about this. When we’re a foot from the end zone on first down, we have to leave lineman in their stances for 30 seconds while we check with Joe.

Then, when we have receivers in motion, we just can’t seem to wait to get the ball snapped

Yea, I would hate for us to get a big 10 guy like Nick Saban, the greatest coach of all time. The big 10 has much better coaches than the current crop
Of sec coaches in 2019.

Can you imagine Nick Saban’s reaction if 2 players were flagged twice for not being set at the line of scrimmage? He’s lose his 17ing mind and prob get tossed.

Some really bad coaches run their programs that way, too. Gene (5-19) Chizik famously spent the first 20 minutes of his Iowa State practices making sure the players could precisely line up their helmets correctly. Conversely, some really successful coaches have let their players run wild.

I dont think discipline and precision are necessarily the foundations of a winning team.....but I do think our team could use some.
