I wanted Pope to work out because it would be best for the program if he had. Now we are in a terrible position. It's pretty obvious he's not going to win at a high level here because he just doesn't have good coaching instincts. He relies way too much on analytics. However, firing a coach after two seasons without some kind of scandal or epic fail is not ideal either. It really sucks.

Unlike our coach, sack up and cut bait. U ain't it my guy.

I have been called a Pope Pumper this season, even though I thought he was a terrible hire at the time. I simply refuse to dog out the coach and the team wearing the Blue during the season. Stand behind them and fight till the end. And with MB here, a third year was always guaranteed, so again, support who we have.

But the season is over now, and we are going to have a new AD. Mark Pope should be fired tomorrow morning. He had injuries this year, no question, Ill give him that. But the team we do have is poorly coached. Iowa State is coached so much better than we are it isn't even funny. We have kids who have stepped up. DA and Oweh have been great this year. Chandler improved and Mo was really good. Pope gave them no help at all. The offense we run is ridiculous. We don't run shooters off screens, we don't back cut, we don't run pick and roll, we don't do a damn thing but run to spots and play one on one. Defensively, our fundamentals have been pathetic. We run under screens, get lost on cutters, we don't even play with our hands up on ball.
We don't block out, not one big blocks out. The only big we have that can board is Mo. We don't run quality sets on inbounds. We don't help on backside, we leave 3 point shooters wide open, we back off top shooters, we make idiotic fouls. We don't play high IQ. We are poorly coached.
Mark's substitution patterns and lineups are nonsense. He coached a terrible game today calling time outs, having sets out of time outs, not calling a damn TO when we got the 5 second call. He is just in over his head.
As far as our personnel, I think we have a lot of players that should not be given up on, because with a high caliber coach, several of these kids have potential. You played against one such coach today. I can name about 20 others if Pope gets fired that can turn this around, and they absolutely don't have to be named Hurley or Oats. We have to let Pope go and we have to get this freaking hire right

I appreciate the fire you brought here and will not take the stance as a few others did telling you to shut up but you really said nothing that most of us was saying all year long. It boils down to one thing, we are poorly coached. Us stating the obvious of the team being poorly coached is not an indictment of support. Hell we stayed here all year long bitching and moaning about the same things and celebrating our small victories when we got them. But the message has been the same all year long which you consistently fought everyone on while presumably feeling the same way. That’s not supporting the program rather coddling it. I will always support the program in a way a fan only can, tune in and watch but I’m not going to watch incompetent coaching all year long and not call it out. It’s ok to call it what it is while the season is going on.

I also completely agree that it doesn't have to be Hurley or Oats. Plenty of really good coaches that can get it done with our resources.

Heck yes there are. I think I listed 20 after Cal left, all of them are killing it where they are now, none were named Drew or Pope. I would think any competent AD would pick one of the same 20 guys because they are probably the same guys most people on here would choose. But I thought that last time too lol

I think it comes down to looking for a coach for the long term. Mark Pope doesn't have to be a terrible coach or anything but the question is "should Mark Pope be the head coach of Kentucky for the next 10-20 years?" That's why you hire a coach, to keep him for a long time. And the answer is just no. It doesn't matter how many years or chances he gets, there are too many fundamental issues.

One of the reasons I think Pope has to go is I don't believe he can coach up the players we do have.
To me, Pope stays, yes, I will root for the Cats and support him in season, but as I said before he was hired, he shouldn't even be considered. If Pope is gone, I think there are Coaches out there that could have Pope, Moreno, MO, Jelly, Kam, Jasper and BG looking like totally different players by the end of the season. That said, none should be the first option on offense, still the second. But take today...Otzelberger wouldn't be number one on my list of candidates to fix this program....but he is damn sure on the list. Do you think one of his teams would give up the garbage baskets we gave up today? He would have Hawthorne D'ing people up

I agree. All of my "top candidates" would be guys that I could see having success here for the next decade+. But if we went with a short term, 3-4 year fix...Pearl, Pitino, Sampson...not ideal, but we wouldn't be getting pulled like we did today, thats for sure

It’s hard to disagree with everything in a post this long but I do.
Pope showed last year he has potential as a coach. He showed this offseason he has no idea how to divide up NIL and scout talent. We don’t have a single SEC starter on our roster besides Oweh. He would be option 4 at Florida. This team is completely void of talent. Malachi is the only person that may develop. Everyone else is a bench player at their best.
The start of the season Pope said they had to dumb down everything. The players couldn’t execute his plays and sets. Not only are they bad dribblers, passers and shooters, they apparently are pretty dumb. Intelligence is a big thing.
I will support Pope putting together one more team. If he chooses to bring guys back from this team, I won’t watch next year. Mark my words. No current player on this roster will ever be a quality SEC starter.
