That sucks.. Next 48 to 72 hours seems incredibly important for sports in 2020.

Why in the world are they shutting down operations and cancelling a series because one coach and one clubhouse staffer tested positive? Quarantine those two and keep rolling. All of their players tested negative. 17ing stupid.

If a team is just going to shut everything down over 1-2 positive tests, then what was the point of even trying to play in the first place? You knew there would be some positive tests. Everyone should sit in isolated, fortified bunkers singing kumbaya for the next 10 years- just to be safe. This **** is getting absurd.

This most definitely sounds like a scenario needs to step in and strongly suggest that the teams play this weekend following confirmed testing of all players and team personnel

I believe that outside of Miami and Philadelphia no other team has had a positive test. If they can just isolate those 2 teams, they should be fine.

I’m not sure it’ll ever get out but it’s clear someone or a group within the Marlins did something that everyone else is avoiding to get infected.

If sports has to stop when 1 or 2 people test positive then we shouldn't even start back. Because it's going to happen. There has to be a protocol in place to isolate those and move on.

Rumor is some Marlins player(s) went out clubbing not too long ago.

I just can’t wrap my mind around cancelling games and closing down the facility when two non-players test positive. Makes zero sense. What is the point of expanded rosters/player pools if teams are going **** their pants over 1-2 positive tests? Why are they even trying to do this if that is the criteria for a shut down? EPL had dozens of positive tests along the way, but I don’t recall them ever stopping.

I’ll tell you this- if that is the mindset of MLB teams and American sports in general, there is no 17ing way ANYTHING outside of the tightest of pro sports bubbles can possibly work. It is set up to fail. As long as we are testing everyone multiple times per week, there are going to be some positives every now and then. It is inevitable.

Totally agree. Why have a 60 team roster if you don't even use it. MLB is screwing the pooch.

Something unique must have happened with the Marlins beyond the fact that they live in Florida as no other team has these issues.

They are probably the youngest team in the MLB so my guess is some of the guys did something against protocol and it's come back to bite them

Agreed. I honestly think any sport that does not go the bubble route is destined not to make it. I’ve enjoyed watching baseball and hope it makes it till the end, I just don’t see it happening.

In my opinion, the nfl would be wise to make plans for a bubble now.

It’s only destined not to make it because of this absurd notion that all activity must be shut down as soon as anyone tests positive.

This is bigger than sports. We as a society have to learn to live with this virus as safely as possible, while also accepting a certain degree of risk. Get on with life, or else we are going to continue seeing things like the Q2 real GDP figures that came out today.

MLB played full schedules during Spanish Flu....except 1918 was shortened about 30 games for WWI...Spanish Flu killed around 50 Million Worldwide, 675K in US and lasted 15 months.

Any info on how many players contracted the Spanish Flu, and did any die from it?

Almost 30% of the population contracted it before it ran its course.... it still is around today...I think maybe one or two players died, a couple of minor leaguers and an umpire.... some players served in the military as well.... I am trying to remember from an article I read on the 100th anniversary of the Flu... The Black Sox scandal happened in 1919 while the Flu was still going on.

It doesn't matter that they all tested negative today. The virus has a very high false negative rate right after you contract it. It takes around three days of having it before the tests get more accurate. If everybody tests negative all through the weekend they can probably start back Monday.

AND mainly targeted and killed the young and healthy. Without rhyme or reason. It's disingenuous to compare Covid to Spanish Flu. 675k mainly young and healthy dead Americans in 1918 = 2.4ish million Americans today. Life expectancy dropped 12 years here during Spanish flu. Will it drop one year for Covid?
