So with the upcoming election and all the bickering between political parties it does make me wonder if there’s not a lawsuit pending in NY in their recent primary. They tossed 80,000 mail-in ballots or roughly 25% of the ones cast. Does somebody file a lawsuit arguing they legally cast a mail-in ballot and due to NY negligence they cannot confirm their vote was counted. My understanding is they mailed ballots to all registered voters and included a postage paid return envelope. USPS does not date stamp postage paid mail. Hmm which ballots count and which ones didn’t. Your thoughts?

These big metropolitan areas, you know there is widespread fraud... heck even at one time I could have voted at two different counties in the same election in Mississippi.

That's a good point about no postmarks.

I guess I'm old school - go to the poll on election day, show your ID, vote, and run your ballot through the machine. I also don't like the concept of early voting, but I suppose the population in some areas is growing so large that voting only on election day may not practical. The standard method I mentioned is about the only way to avoid widepsread fraud or mistakes though.

What happens if a person votes early, or votes by mail, and then dies before election day. Does their ballot still count?

There’s a real possibility we don’t know who wins the election until December 2020. That could be a nightmare.

I was registered twice in my county. Coulda voted twice but never did. I was constantly getting summoned to jury duty. It's since been corrected.

Voting is a right, just like protesting. If you can do the latter in large groups, then you can do the former. Pretty straightforward.

By the way, they managed to have regular elections in the midst of the Spanish Flu of 1918 (mid-term elections at that) which was much deadlier than COVID, so I see no reason why we can't do it if they did.

It was deadlier, but I'm not sure it's as contagious as Covid-19. I really don't know, but the one we have now is a wild one.

There could be several reasons the 1918 Pandemic was deadlier, including poorer communications, effects of WWI troop movements, lower levels of medical technology, etc. But, the population in this country was about 1/3 what it is now, so the country was more rural with less chance of close contact.

Doesnt the state of Oregon have mail-in voting? Ive read about their process and fraud is pretty much non-existent, right? Both parties accept the results. Seems like a model to look into and perhaps replicate elsewhere.

Utah has it too i think?...at least in some capacity.

Instead of a lot of useful discussion, this thread is basically one big conservative trope so far.

I don't know if it's true, but I think Trump said a few days ago that 110% of the people in Los Angeles County were registered to vote. Only 79% of the county is over 18 and eligible to vote, so at least 40% of those "eligible" would be either dead or moved away from the area. And I'm sure there are a lot of "illegal aliens" there who are not qualified to vote in the US. It won't really matter in the presidential election because they're voting for Biden anyway, but it very well could matter in other states.

The voting rolls are a mess.

Yes, Oregon has had mail in voting for years. My in-laws lived there for a while. They had ballot drop boxes in the town or you could mail it.

I think Oregon, and maybe Washington too, have had mail-in voting for a while. Nevada's trying to set it up before November - good luck. Don't know about Utah.

But you've got to admit there's more room for mistakes to haven, if nothing else, given the track record of the USPS in delivering mail. A large portion of my mail is delivered to someone else. If I mail a letter to my neighbor, it goes to Birmingham, then hopefull comes back 3 days later. If you order a package, there's a good chance it'll never make it, at least in one piece. So overwhelming them with 150 million people receiving and mailing back ballots has the potential to be a nightmare.

And none of that includes outright fraud. There has to be a greater chance of fraud than going to your poll, showing a photo ID while being checked to see if you're on that precinct's roll, filling out your ballot, and running it through the machine. Here, and presumably other places, they even run your DL or other voter ID through a scanner to make sure you don't somehow vote twice.

I don't really see anything "conservative" about insuring only qualified voters vote, and vote just once. Everybody should want that. Now if you want to argue the legitimacy of the electoral college, then I might be on the side I'll presume you're on (a vote should count the same regardless of where you are).

One more thing (or two or three) - if you don't drive, there are measures in place to get you a alternate photo voter ID. If you can't get to the poll, someone will easily take you. It doesn't matter what color you are or what party you favor.

I can't speak to voter fraud in other states, but I can talk about Texas. I have lived in several zip codes that have more illegal immigrants from Mexico than the entire state of Mississippi could imagine.

I know this much... You better not try to go to 7-11 at lunch time in my hood because there is a line out the door trying to heat up homemade lunch in the microwaves. Come voting time it's nothing but English speaking caucasians as far as the eye can see.

If illegal immigrants were voting, Texas would be the bluest state in the union.

As for the rest of it I have no ideas.... And it really doesn't matter other than a handful of purple states.

I wouldn't get too worked up about voter fraud in NY. It's not going to make a difference. In Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Florida, and a few states with tight Senate races... A handful of votes may be the whole microwaved enchilada.

I’ve voted both republican and democrat before, probably more democrat. But I don’t think voting by mail is a good idea. I also believe you should have to show an ID. There are plenty of options for people that don’t have transportation to get to polls.

My belief is that if voting is such a sacred right that we cherish then we should protect that. You need to be able to prove it’s actually you that’s voting as well. I just don’t see how showing up with an ID leads to voter suppression. But I can certainly see how mailing in a ballot can lead to lots of fraud.

That's true, as well as for California, Minnesota, and a few other states. Regardless - shouldn't we strive for honest elections and election rules?

You're a reasonable (at least semi-) Democrat. I won't argue a person's right to hold the views they do, but I will argue with their attempts to do things dishonestly.

Very true. I guess I was thinking that any real fraud is going to target areas that will swing the vote.

But yes, every vote should be legitimate. And the saddest thing about this country is voter turnout.

Given that national voting day "is statutorily set as the Tuesday next after the first Monday in the month of November", how can mail-in and early voting even be legal?

Has there been an amendment that allows voting nationally on any other day?

I agree on the ID. Last I checked, nobody claims it's racist for a bank to ask for an ID to cash a check or for a pharmacy to ask for an ID to pick up a prescription....but when it comes to voting?

When anyone says they are against requiring ID to vote, you have to ask...what are they scared of?

There needs to be a purging of politicians in this country.

What's needed is a legit 3rd party and TERM LIMITS.

It's ridiculous that our only true options for the next POTUS are 2 old rich senile out-of-touch white guys.

Warrants would be my guess.

Never thought about that, but I suppose it's a possibility. That's not a very good reason though. If they know where to mail a ballot to, or know who you are when you go vote (and they have to know that), then you could be checked for outstanding warrants just as easily as with an ID.

Term limits for Congress definitely. Maybe Representatives 6 two-year terms, and Senators 2 six-year terms.

For president, the minimum age is 35. Why not a maximum age, maybe 65 or 70? I think the ideal age is probably in the 50s.

- yes I would guess mistakes could happen due to the mail losing or delaying delivery due to a number of issues.

- I would also point out that in person voting isn't exactly mistake free. Hanging chads n whatnot.

- I totally disagree that there is a good chance a package won't make it in one piece if sent thru usps. Thats a gross overstatement.

- I agree that there is nothong inherently conservative in wanting to ensure voting is legitimate. Everyone should want elections to be fair and convenient.

37% of state house reps are republican and 40% of state seanators are republican. 1 of 5 federal reps are republican.

So you mean to say democrats aren't in danger of losing a statewide election besides having already lost in 40% of the state rep elections and also a federal rep election.

Good point, dreb.**

Oh, and care to address how poorly your narrative plays out in Utah, which has had mail in voting for over 8 years?

Maybe in your feelings, but in the world of facts, the only significant case of voter fraud (so bad that an entire House of Representatives election had to be thrown out) was done by the Republicans:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_North_Carolina's_9th_congressional_district_election

And what's the top current news story about voter fraud right now if you Google it? Oh, this story from Kansas. Guess which party.

https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/510603-rep-steve-watkins-loses-kansas-gop-house-primary

I'm of course not saying that all Republicans are complicit in voter fraud. The vast, vast majority of people of all persuasions aren't. But the idea that Democrats are the ones committing it clearly doesn't square with the actual facts.

That's not a good comparison, because getting to cash a check at the bank isn't a constitutional right. Voting is.

As weird as it is to people like us, a whole lot of people don't have an ID. I don't know how they go through life without it, it's totally alien to me. And yet they exist.
