Montgomery needs to get it in gear soon. If he can’t make the necessary jump this season, he might want to pay attention to Richards and his development in year three and consider taking the same path. Come back and have a good offseason, and be ready to play next season.
It may be that EJ just don't want to be here, sorta like Diallo, and just passing time to the draft. EJ gone, IMO.

the way he is playing now he may be drafted by the military. The tools are there, but he needs to take them out of the bag and use them.

Brooks is the one closest to having a breakout imo. If Whitney keeps putting the work in like Cal said he did today, it will come.
Why EJ isn't living in the gyn reveals a lot imo. Unless he want a career overseas, he needs to wake up and realize that he is 6-11.
I have hope for the two freshman, not so much for EJ.

Give as many minutes as possible to Brooks, lots of upside-IQ, length,
scoring, fluid. Whitney has a lot of tools just going to take time for the game to slow down for him.
EJ does some good things at times
however he lacks confidence, athleticism, not a very smooth athlete, too stiff, reactions are slow. He will make one good play then three bad ones. Probaby a three to four year player who wanted out last year. Needs to hang tough, play hard, keep working, be a team first guy and hopefully his time will come. We need his size.

Maybe I'm just hoping really hard, but I am expecting Whitney to break out of it and begin to be a contributor. Same for Brooks.
However, I have pretty much given up on EJ. There's just not much I can see that has improved since he's been here. Just makes zero impact on a game on either end.

he’s perfect for the NBA

Its a damn Shame EJ isn't good at basketball. A fairly big guy who can run the floor pretty fast. How he is a terrible basketball player is baffling.

My issue with EJ is like Saturday's game missing a couple of easy layups and he had a couple of outside shots he missed. We have to get some scoring production from him to really have that deep run to the Final Four. Cal continues to play him 30-35 minutes and he is just not scoring. Sestina is a player that if you run plays for him from outside and from 3 he will hit the shot. In the OSU game he shoots 6/11 and 5/8 from 3 for 17 points. Sestina also has a nice hook shot inside too and a excellent FT shooter and always is hustling when in the lineup. Sestina and IQ both could easily score 15-18 ppg. if we run plays for them and they are both outstanding FT Shooters and gives it 100% while on the court. I believe Brooks is one that can produce too while on the court. We have now the Guards or Richards that are producing most of our points. We have to start getting production from EJ, Whitney, and Brooks to make that deep run in the Tourney.

(1) There is a spot on the floor where EJ Montgomery looks very comfortable and that's from 10-15 feet out on the weak side in a high post situation, with the option to turn and shoot or take a power dribble in to shoot from 6-8 feet. He looks very good at it when he tries it. This was the exact same thing that made Tayshaun Prince successful. We all remember the threes, but Tay made his bones in the high post. EJ is a decent enough shooter to his that shot consistently. The problem is that this usually puts him in a bad spot for getting offensive rebounds, which is how Calipari wants him to get his points at the moment. It also requires a more rhythmic offense to execute and some degree of patience, and UK is just zipping the ball around the perimeter right now.

(2) The person who made the Wenyan Gabriel comparison about Brooks is exactly right. He is long, rangy, and fundamentally sound. Just needs to improve on his defensive rotations and get tougher.

(3) Whitney has the physical tools to dominate, but he is really lost on both ends of the floor. He's transitioning from a situation in high school in which he could physically overpower defenders and get a lot of cleanup points around the rim. He is struggling to learn how to be a complete player. Basic things like good shooting form are a chore for him right now. He will get there.

EJ has all the physical tools to be special. It just seems to me watching him play he that wants to roam around the outside and shoot jumpers. That may work in the NBA, but we need more than that from him. Nick needs some help down low.

The level of production is shockingly low with EJ and Khalil. EJ lacks explosiveness and a high energy motor. Khalil seems truly confused, but like today's dunk attempt, he needs one of those to go down--the infusion of confidence with just one play like that can turn your mind around. EJ looks like a player who may care about how he looks and the outcome of the game, but may just lack the skill physically and mentally to do much about it. At one point, I counted three major errors he made in about 10 seconds. His shot is still off, and at times he handles passes as if they were hot potatoes. Some of his offense is not his fault, but he again lacks skills in creating his own shot and lacks explosiveness to enhance his chances of a made basket. Some drastic action needs to be taken to get these guys more confidence...one motivator is the bench and possibly some public embarrassment to get some adrenaline flowing. Tarzan playing like Jane comes to mind.

I feel better about the lowest rated recruit of the three. Brooks has a game. I would design some offense down low for him. But, I don't like his adding to our woeful percentage from the arc. Right now, he needs to post up on the block.
It’s taken Nick until his junior year to figure it out. One of the main annoyances with Cal’s one and done brand is that kids no longer have the space and luxury to improve over time. These guys need to be great right away or else they are “busts.”

Maybe EJ just needs a little more time. He’s had some moments here or there. It would help this team if he were further along, but I wouldn’t call him a bust yet just as I wouldn’t have called Nick a bust at the midway point last year.

I think EJ's is 100% confidence. He plays like someone that is terrified to make a mistake.

This. If EJ would stay around, he would be a really good player, IMO.
