Eight Colleges Going Division 1

This must be extra tough doing this through corona. One not on this list and just starting the process is the University of Saint Thomas in Minnesota.

A few of them have been hitting up the portal to help the transition.

California Baptist has picked up Pavel Zakharov (7-0, 235, So.) from Gonzaga and Hunter Chance (6-6, 190, RS Jr) from Long Beach State.

St. Thomas has picked up Courtney Brown (6-7, 213, Jr) from Milwuakee and J'Vonne Hadley (6-6, 200, Fr) from Northeastern.

Merrimack picked up Tavon Jones (6-3, 180, Jr) from Northern Illinois.

That will bring us up to three teams with San Diego in their name...... San Diego State, San Diego, and UC San Diego.

Mr Twister, yes, all sports. Saint Thomas was so good in their Division 3 conference that the league kicked them out lol

On the flip side , Hartford is looking at dropping down to Division 3.

They didn't play football, I assume, since it wasn't mentioned in the article. That would have been the obvious sport to drop since it costs so much.

Hartford has a beautiful campus. I didn't realize that it has 7000 students - that is Hofstra's size but Hofstra always seemed larger to me. I'm wondering what they gain by dropping all sports down. If basketball doesn't lose money, why not keep them at D1? They already have a conference with an auto-bid and are in a city that has TV stations so they likely get more local coverage than we do, with our "local" channels being in NYC and Philly, where they have to devote nearly all of their time on their pro teams.

Don't these schools know that the Transfer Portal, NIL and "1 free transfer" is making Div-1A obsolete except for the top 9 teams?

Everyone else is dropping all sports or moving to 1-AA.

Clearly they haven't seen all the "sky is falling" threads on this board about those topics.

Without looking them up, how many of these did you know existed or what states some of them were in. The only reason I knew about Saint Thomas was because they are a pretty good hockey school.

Tavon Jones never played a game at Northern Illinois as he had a knee operation. He played 2 years at Odessa Juco in Texas and now will join two other former 1000 point scorers from Linden at Merrimack in Mikey Watkins and Khalif Crawford. I hope he does well. He made first team All State twice at Linden.

In order to stay at D1, the college has to sponsor a minimum number of sports at the D1 level. I think it is 12. So a school can't just keep basketball at D1 and move all the others down. Same for Football, which Hartford does not have and America East does not sponsor.

Wesley College discontinues all sports. They are not going to go the FDU Route, with one campus Division 1 and another campus Division 3 after they become part of Delaware State University.

It’s crazy to me that during a time where most colleges seem to be struggling financially, they are trying to transition to D1. I can’t imagine these schools posting a gain on big time sports

I believe all these schools decided to go Division 1 before corona. I don’t think Hartford will be the last to consider moving to Division 2 or 3. In addition, some private colleges have gone out of business. Both the University of Tennessee and Delaware State University have recently taken over small private colleges to add new campuses.
