Found a tape at my father's last night of Ed Davender's last high school game. My father was a high school basketball assistant coach in the Bronx and they were set to play the winner of Davender's game. Man he was damn good.

I loved Ed and those teams. Kenny Walker and Roger Harden, Winston Bennett was a brute, Richard Madison wasn’t the best but I loved his hustle! They were all some of my favorites around that time!! Theres way too many favorites for me to write down! Well, I guess I could but it would take all day. Haha. Just list the rosters!!! Go Cats!

I will say about Ed, he never left the court and you not think he gave everything he had. Not one time! I know he had his little thing that happened a few years ago, but those guys that gave everything are always going to be my favorite players, weather they’re the best players or not! Most of the time, they are the best because of giving it all!

Of all the UK players I played pickup games with in the 80's Ed Davender was by far the quickest. He was really fast.

I think Ed Davender may have signed with UK without ever having visited the campus. He was so fun to watch. He could teach our current guards a thing or two

Ed Davender was one of my favorite 80's players. I never felt like he got enough credit. When he wanted to, he could get to the rack and either finish or get fouled. I hate that he struggled so mightily after his UK career. It is too bad there were not as many options for non-NBA players then as there are today. He could have definitely played in an overseas league had the money been there at the time.

He was diagnosed with a heart problem. That's what derailed his pro career.

loved the Master Blaster but he wasn’t known for his hustle. As a matter of fact, he was considered lazy and an underachiever. Tons of potential.

I blocked him taking a layup at the High Street Y. One of my 'shining moments.'
I chugged Budweisers with him at Pure Gold. He left to make curfew at the lodge and snuck back out. He said if Coach Sutton could drink, he should be able to as well. He was a lot of fun to be around.

That's awesome. A different time for sure.

I was fortunate enough to play a couple pickup games against him and james Blackmon in alumni gym. We got smoked but still lots of fun.

Think about these numbers for Davender when his career at UK ended:

7th all-time in points
4th all-time in assists
1st all-time in steals

One of the most under-appreciated players in UK history imo.

Ed and James Blackmon brought over high school recruits to our apt on Aylesford to do a little more than drink. It was after all Lexington in the mid 1980’s. Got to meet Terry Mills and Derrick Coleman and J. R. Reid on their official visits. All of them of course unofficially committed to us while on Aylesford.
