If, as they just said on the Ole Miss game, his first love is baseball, his goal is MLB, and he has no intention of playing in the NFL, he shouldn’t be playing football.

No kidding. It can't be good for career longevity to be playing football now.

Bo Jackson would be in the baseball hall of fame right now and might own the HR record if he quit football after college, or never played in the first place.

I think the fact he bypassed the draft to play college football is a pretty clear sign the "his first love is baseball" story was mostly just sour grapes from us not signing him.

Bo Jackson says hi. 1989 All-Star in baseball and made Pro Bowl in NFL that same year

Unpopular opinion. OM has two damn good freshmen running backs, and a damn good freshman QB. Dude gets around the edge very quickly when he runs it and doesn't seem to make terrible decisions. If they get a line and keep improving on D, they will be dangerous in the next few years.

Yeah all these examples are over 30 years old. Its just not feasible anymore with the time
commitment/specialization

Counterpoint, if he was at state under the same circumstances this thread wouldn’t exist.

They're dangerous this year. Hopefully by the EB our tackling will be much better.

There is a good one. So we have one in 30 years so far. I should have known better than to use a blanket statement

It will be very difficult for either Plumlee or Ealy to progress over their college career in either football or baseball unless they commit to one or the other especially Plumlee. I just don't think a starting SEC QB can be a limited participant in spring practice every year.

Yep. Every State fan that followed recruiting, said he would never step foot on their campus.

Neither Ealy or Plumlee can really hit, so wouldn't expect either to really help OM much on the baseball field.

Are you talking just college or pro too? I think you can do both in college, but not in the pros. Have to be a damn good athlete though. But at the end of the day it's about what gets you drafted highest. Hard to project what anybody will actually do the pros. So I say, play both if you can. I believe the time commitment is the big issue, not the specialization. Specialization is overblown.

I don’t expect either to ever contribute in baseball, outside of pinch running or late game situational defensive substitutions. Ealy was a Top 10 projected pick going into his senior year, and then plummeted due to A) his inability to consistently hit prep school pitching and B) his insistence he wanted to play football if he didn’t get $2 million plus. I don’t see A) going away against SEC pitching with limited practice time due to football. Grae Kessinger and Thomas Dillard struggled mightily as freshmen in the SEC. I’m sure you all have plenty of examples, too.

As much as I’d love them both to contribute as much as the hype they’re getting.. I just don’t see it happening. Looks like they will be major football contributors, though. But, hey, at least they helped us hang another make believe runner-up recruiting battle!
