“Well, you know, we knew that if we didn’t guard, we were going to have problems. We did a poor job of guarding the ball, but that’s tribute to him. He’s a strong, tough, little guy that gets to where he wants to get and then shares the ball. That was probably the key to the game. We just didn’t guard the ball well. And then, when you don’t guard the ball well, with all that shooting they have and then the size inside, you’re scrambling.”

I don't think he got the memo from this message board on Wheeler. This nut job thinks Wheeler's play was the key to the game. He should just hang up his whistle, guy can't even see how crappy that kid is. Doesn't he know Wheeler hasn't won an NCAA tournament game? If he knew that, they would have been able to guard him for sure. 😁

Maybe so. I let some irritate me, it's true. Truth is Wheeler is one of the keys to this team, whether he starts or comes off the bench. I guarantee you, teams planning to defend UK have to start by figuring out how to stop Wheeler from getting into the lane.

Well, he's right, Wheeler can kill you if you don't cage him in, the problem with Wheeler is he'll make a great play, then follow it up with two plays where he overpenetrates, jumps in the air and throws the ball away.
At this point in his career, he should know when to force the action and when to back out and run offense from the top.
I love seeing him in there, he just needs to play smarter.

The Duquesne coach isn't going to critique our guys the way we would, so it's really not fair to call out "the Wheeler haters", whoever they are.

Not true last night. He made 11 great plays and 2 bad plays as evidenced by his 11 assists and 2 turnovers. That is not a 2 to 1 turnover ratio to assists as you have just outlined. Did you watch the game at all?

Haha! No, you've got it backwards. Wheeler is a career 3 to 1 assist to turnover guy. Last night it was better than 5 to 1. 11 to 2 was the ratio. So, truth is, for every bad play he makes, and there were 2 Last night where he drove too deep and turned it over, he makes 3 or 4 great plays. Last night it was 5. Our problem, as fans who analyze and amplify every mistake, is we don't see the great plays as much as the negative.

Couple of times last he over penetrated which led to turnovers. Just needs to eliminate those plays.

Then he has a great play where he penetrated, drew to defenders then dropped it off to Ugonna. Great pass too.

It would be nice to eliminate all turnovers but that is impossible. However I will take last night's Wheeler every game this year.

I don't have it backwards. I'm not just talking about assist to turnover ratio.
I expect this out of KL, but not you. You're smarter than this.
Just because it's a bad play, or a mistake, doesn’t mean it was a turnover.

We have to have Wheeler if we have a chance to get number nine. Some might not think so, but you saw what happened when he came in. He might be weak on his outside shot but he makes up for it with his on the ball defense and steals. He is so good at finding the open man and knowing when to go to the basket, He is a very important part of our team. I'm sure Wallace was relieved when Wheeler came in, there is a need for both of them, Cal knows this.

I'm a Wheeler guy, and like his game a lot. The contrast is the tough part... Because the turnovers he makes are typically big-time head scratchers, not just a run of the mill turnover. I think he plays so fast, that it would actually help if he slowed it down a tick before he puts himself in a position where a TO is imminent. Think a lot us are saying the same thing. Love what he brings to the table, but needs to continue to improve playing within himself and playing to his strengths.

We know what we’re going to get out of Wheeler at this point. Bring him off the bench for 20 minutes in an energy role.

Cason has the higher ceiling. The team has a higher ceiling with him. That jumper off the inbounds last night for three was a thing of beauty and showcases the things wheeler just can’t do.

Yep, 2 bad plays, 11 good plays. But here is the real question, and I've asked myself this many times. If you try to handcuff a guy like Wheeler and tell him to stop driving in so deep, do you lose the 11 good plays? Part of what makes Wheeler so dynamic is what also makes him frustrating at times. But you almost have to live with the mistakes in order to get those great plays. I'll take 11 and 2 every game. I have heard Calipari address it multiple times- play fast but don't hurry.

Wheeler has played the game long enough now, he should know when to force the action and when to back it out.
We all saw last night where multiple times, he mindlessly drove into 4 defenders with nowhere to go and got trapped. Yeah, sometimes it worked out, but better opponents will swallow him up.
As I'm watching, I'm thinking to myself, where was he going there? Why is a senior trying to force something that isn't even close to a possibility?

Coach Cal has to let starters get a breather, and the rotation for that has to be solid.

I think Wheeler has reached a ceiling with his style of play but I do think if he can do what he does best, we may get something positive from him. Im not a fan of how he drives to the basket and just throws the ball up to the basket. He can pass the ball if he would. Create offense out of a drive to the basket.
