1) Hotty Toddy (cringeworthy in general, but specifically as a greeting; War Eagle is also a stupid greeting, just in a more manly way)

Also, I don't mind HailState, but being "Hailstated" randomly on the street when wearing MSU gear is also cringeworthy. I think it's generational, maybe? I might give an exception if the locale is a post-season site and is really all about MSU, but in everyday life, hard pass.

I do have to agree with you, here... I've always cringed a little when greeted with "Hotty Toddy". I won't lie and say that I never say it, but I don't say it much. I just feel awkward saying Hotty Toddy to a random person I encounter. Like I said, there's a lot of college and even pro team sayings, chants and traditions that are pretty cringeworthy once you really start thinking about them.

Dumb chants and traditions are what make college sports the best in the world to follow. You just named a couple of the most unique and recognizable chants in the country. I love the weirdness of them all.

...after a football opponent was injured and down on the field. Happened once and once only. The mike man at State got in trouble for that one (and should have).

I remember that incident very well. It was in the 80s and I was in the student section. The guy started the chant and everybody sat there kind of stunned for a moment then he suffered the indignity of getting booed by his own student section. I will give him credit though because as soon as the boos started he switched without missing a beat from 'he got his bell rung' to 'how about them bulldogs' in the same cadence. I don't recall him getting in much trouble after it other than some comments in the reflector. I also don't think he meant anything malicious with it either. Just a dumb decision by a college student that probably sounded good at the time but in retrospect was not. I am sure its one of those things he still thinks about with regret in his 50s by now.

You are right about that. These things that are derided by opposing fans are cherished traditions by the schools that use them and that is really all that counts. It's no different than the rituals that are done by many clubs & organizations. They might look silly to outsiders but it is part of what binds them together.

Not a chant, but Georgia's Fight song, a sped up version of the Battle Hymn, always sounds like "I've been working on the Railroad". Drives me crazy.

Yeah, that song has just 4 words in it that are repeated over and over. Auburn uses the identical tune and lyrics just substituting Auburn for Georgia. To each his own though.
