Questionable and probably not needed. If it had worked it would have continued momentum. What is dumber on that play is the kicker didn't send it even 10 yds Maybe the turf fields make inside bounce harder than the old AstroTurf fields.

That decision didn't cost WVU the game. A broken finger on Grier's throwing hand in the 1st qtr did.

Backup QBs are backups for a reason-the starter is better. It is a hard job to come in in relief, especially in college. The backup doesn't get the reps and it's hard to stay interested week after week after week (this is game 11) when the starter just keeps playing and doing good. Plus there's only 16 hrs practice time in a week (4 hrs game time makes 20 hrs total). This week of practice will give Him a better chance for success.

You're right. It didn't cost the game, but here's the problem I have with opting for it. Generally speaking, only two things happen on an onside kick. You get the ball at midfield, or (probably 90% or more of the time} your opponent gets the ball at midfield. Pretty limited options. If you kick deep maybe the returner muffs the kick, maybe there's a fumble, maybe the kicker puts it thru the endzone. At any rate there's a good chance UT starts at, let's say, the thirty. There's certainly no guarantee that WV forces a 3 and out like they did at midfield, but if they did maybe they field the punt at the thirty instead of having it downed at their three. Or, maybe they return it for a big gain, or a touchdown. Aren't coaches supposed to play the odds?

I'm no coach, but All I will say is maybe you feel you have to gamble when your offense is down the starting qb and the backup has produced 1 scoring drive in 2.5 qtrs.

The most under appreciated aspect of football is kicking and punting, and we need improvement in both areas. We need LEGS. It reminds me of 2004.

II thought the onside kick was not a good call with the time remaining. The defense was on a roll and playing inspired. INT returned for 6 and a long drive to score a TD. The D was well rested. If there had been under 3 or 4 minutes then yeah I would have tried it.
