What has happened in the last 3 years is that the legendary, revered "GOAT" Coach K after 30 or so years has completely abandoned his former philosophy and bought in totally on Cal 's OAD system, and in doing so, he's really hampered Cal. Plus - unlike Cal - he's done it with ZERO criticism of the whole idea of OAD. It's made Cal's job much harder because realistically there isn't enough talent in most high school classes to support more than 1-2 schools trying to win with a multi-OAD approach.
Duke had the No. 1 class two years ago. They had the No. 1 class last year, No. 1 this year, and they're probably going to be No. 1 next year, because they have multiple, HUGE advantages over UK. First, media darling Coach K, who doesn't have to deal with a fraction of the negative BS Cal is subjected to, second, the ACC, which is legitimately a much better basketball conference than the football-centric SEC, third, a prestigious private near Ivy League school loaded up with rich kids the players can hang with and get "perks" from vs. a typical public state university in a state that isn't exactly flush with cash.
Fourth, being a protected media favorite as opposed to a never-ending target still tarred with a bad reputation from 30 yr old infractions, fifth, a rich, powerful, connected alumni base, not just in the NBA, but in business, the media, etc. and sixth Coach K's immense Team USA advantages. It's no coincidence that the injured Harry Giles, but not injured Dennis Smith, is at the Hoop Summit right now. It's also no coincidence that Duke finds out about and locks in on prospects like Frank Jackson before anyone else knows about them.
Considering all their advantages, I think it's pretty amazing that Cal managed to pull together a team as talented as last year's team. Dukes 2017 team may challenge that squad in sheer talent, and should be similarly tasked with the 40-0 challenge.
If this keeps up, I think Cal may have to modify his approach somewhat, but I wouldn't be surprised to see K retire in the next 1-2 years, and that would go a long way to leveling the playing field between the two schools.
