Duke Makes Massive Scheduling Change

Looks like the Scheyer regime is getting rid of Coach K's biggest rule- to never do a home and home with anyone.

K was the king of always playing at home or neutral site in non conference, with the exception of the ACC-Big 10 challenge (which he was forced to do).

Outside of the forced Big-10 challenge, Duke hasn't done a true non-conference home and home with a power-5 opponent since 2008.

They have played 1 true non-conference road game in close to 20 years (again excluding the forced Big-10 challenge, which they have played a decent bit more home games than road games in that challenge).

And dog Cal for his scheduling...

Wouldn't mind if Cal found a way to get a deal done with Duke!

The best thing for our scheduling would have been to get out of the CBS Sports Classic and replace it with a home and home like UNC. Every year having the Champions Classic, a revolving H&H like Michigan currently(I know we have London but then a H&H), UNC, UL, and SEC/B12 Classic. That guarantees 5 noteworthy non conference games with multiple home non conference marquee games.

I would be fine with us getting out of the CBS Classic, if we filled it with a home/home option with teams like UNC, Ohio State, UCLA, Zona, Sparty, Syracuse, etc.

Side note- have we played Syracuse a single time since the title game back in the 90s?

Still remember that game at UK when they had Jay Williams. We played so good and I thought we would pull that one out but he lit us up second half.
That was a neutral site game, we haven't played Duke in Lexington since 1980 when the tournament was in Rupp, and not in the regular season since 1969. We last played at Duke in 1958.

That's a huge shame.

K always stood in the way of this previously, but I think it's time to get this done.

Let's play Duke next year with our super class vs. theirs, get the home and home going

I'd like to see how the NCAA and the officials treat Duke now that K is gone, before we schedule a game that was formerly an unwinnable matchup at Cameron.

Scheyer is showing confidence and unfortunately is not only keeping Duke in the elite status but building his own brand. He can sell to prospects that they will be on t.v., play big games and not just in the ACC, and also be another major program's super bowl too. The hope always was that K would retire and Cal would now be the main man. Didn't happen.

If it was winnable for teams like SFA, Michigan State, and Louisville then it would sure as hell be winnable for us.

Yeah, it's possible for sure. But we also have to deal with whatever the NCAAs hang up is with us as well. I know Mark Emmert is gone, but the guy literally took time out of his busy work week to get on Cal for a 500 ball.

The team they continually try to derail (UK) attempting to get a win AT the school they always protect (Duke). Until I see something change, hard pass.

And that includes Kansas.. no desire to ever play at either of those arenas again. Way too much of an uphill battle.

K’s coaching tree has never produced a college coach who was better than average.

You think this goober who’s building his team around freshmen who can’t shoot will be the exception?

Nike can deliver as many recruits as they walk. I’ll believe he’s a coach when I see it.

Your post is BS.

I rather see my team in hostile environments. Even if it means the home team gets a favorable whistle. Especially when you consider losing those games don’t knock us down as much as winning them would bump us up.

The dude hasn't even been a head coach for 4 months and you're already crowning him? Lmao

Duke barely even has a starting backcourt at the moment for their current team.

Cal is putting together a class in 2023 that will blow Duke's current #1 class out of the water. I'm not worried in the slightest.

I really like the Roach, Proctor, Whitehead combo in the backcourt.

Proctor is a reclass who was a desperation attempt because Duke missed on every other guard this spring.

Roach has a lot of holes in his game and doesn't even approach being on Wheeler's level.

Whitehead is very talented, no doubt, but not really a guard.

But they have no depth at the 1 and 2 spots, and their starting guards are not up to Duke's usual standards at all.

They were in a mad scramble this spring and had to convince Proctor, who is not ready physically or talent-wise for this level, to reclass and will have to play a huge role.

Maybe.. it's not a wrong argument or anything. ANd it does bring a marquee game to Rupp, which I know is important to the fanbase. I get the appeal.

My counter is that the tournament is played on neutral courts, which will almost never be hostile, due to the nature of BBN and how well they travel. So I don't think a game @Duke is any sort of "prep" for something down the road. The game @Duke will probably be as big s hurdle as any game in the tournament (sans the Title game).

Now, I'm totally for home and homes with any other team, even knowing their place will treat it like the superbowl. I'm fine with that.. but trying to win at Cameron (or AFH, for that matter) is just not worth it IMO. You're starting that game in a 15pt hole.

I mean yeah I would obvisouly take Wheeler over Roach but im not sure how you can watch Roach being absolutely clutch in the NCAA tourney for them and say he doesnt even approach being on Wheeler's level. Proctor is a stud IMO, he is defitnely ready talent wise to handle the 20-25 minutes a game that he is going to be getting. I dont think their team overall will be as good as ours but I think their backcourt is perfectly fine.

Coach K just retired and we haven't even started the first season after his retirement. I would wait a bit before getting your hopes up that UK won't have a second wind under Calipari. Cal has a lot to prove on the court, but recruiting is clearly on an uptick and probably by the end of the month people are really going to be excited about the 2023 roster.

Scheyer hasn't won anything so let's just see what happens.

I think Proctor is really under-sized, and I think the fact that Duke tried to land about 15 different guards, struck out on all of them, and THEN decided to try to get Proctor to reclass was a tell-tale sign. They didn't think he'd be ready either and tried to get every guard under the sun (only to swing and miss on guards in favor of Miami, Kansas State, Missouri, Illinois, etc).

I don't necessarily think Duke will be BAD, they'll be good, but their backcourt will be really weak and has zero depth, which often results in an early exit.

I would rank Brey, Amaker, and Oats as above average college coaches, but his tree hasn’t produced anyone elite.

Idk, I get where you are coming from there but I have been keeping up with Proctor for awhile and the way he has been playing on the international level makes me think he can adjust quite well to the college level. I always give a slight bump to the international guys when it comes to recruiting as it seems like 9/10 times they are underated and overperfrom once they get to school as we have seen with our own in SGA and Murray.

Duke used todo HaH with Michigan, did some with G'Town, and St. John's. They also played at UNLV (but not at Thomas and Mack, but in Vegas) and at UNC-Greensboro (but at Greensboro Coliseum, which was basically a Duke home game).

Am I losing my mind, or has the 22-23 season for Scheyer already ended and he won it all in his first year at Puke?

There is literally no evidence to support saying that Scheyer is suddenly "the man". Let's cross this bridge around end of December or mid-ACC conference schedule. My prediction? They'll have 8-10 losses by end of January and people will be laughing at Scheyer.

H&H with all border states. TN & Missou are covered. Illinois, IU or Notre Dame, TOSU, West Virginia, Virginia.

if I had to pick one, West Virginia would be my choice.

With cal the good old nuetral court in Las Vegas or Chicago where half the arena is empty is our scheduling. We still play good teams but still my wish is cal would get over himself and play in one of these early season tournaments like Maui or the battle for Atlantis or the PK80

Maui is never in a empty gym except Covid, and the other two maybe hypothetical on my end but if your going to have that philosophy than play in one of these tournament and get some good early season exposure

Wow, I never said he was going to be a great coach or have a winning season. But, clearly his recruiting has been phenomenal and he has beaten us on several of the most elite recruits (and as some of you said without ever having a game played). His moving the needle in the home and away game is another smart move. Having said what I did; I hope he and Penny go down in flames for their respective programs.

I hate true road games. They don’t benefit the program at all and we rarely get the kind of whistle in the return game that we have to deal with in the road game.

Giving duke a chance to come in and hang an L on us in rupp because we can’t buy a call at home these days isn’t worth watching us get screwed in durham.

I have a lot of criticisms of Cal but getting rid of the majority of the home and homes in favor of neutral court games isn’t one of them. That’s one thing he did that was actually best for the program
