Anybody else notice the condition on the infield grass last night? I've never seen it like that before. Were there some bad storms or something last week? I don't live in MS so I'm not sure if that's weather related, but it looks to be.

Either way, not a good look for a school known for turfgrass development. Oh well, as long as we win.

Seems like the infield has taken a hit under Cohen. I never remember going out under Polk and thinking "Man, the infield looks like hell".

According to Bart

The ice caused holes in the tarp and then we were really wet after that so I think it has to do with it having too much water.

Not to mention we played on it with it very wet this weekend.

Ah, the old tarp malfunction. I bet if we played a road game on a field that looked like that we'd be giving somebody hell.

It is about time for it to begin to transition to bermuda too isn't it?

ETA: Remember, we redid the playing surface and drainage system on Dudy Noble a few years back and went sand-based on the soil to the tune of over $1million. So, there's a number of relatively new variables to the equation.

I agree that it looked like crap and should be mocked.

ETA2: Cohen wants to make the whole infield artificial. Has for awhile, but knows there will be an uproar about it. "Not being able to keep it looking good or even decent" is a logical step toward getting people to accept his goal -- although I don't think people would ever accept that...

Add in the amount of games/practices on it and that's be result. My guess is it will look close to normal by next weekend

For a team built around pitching into grounders and turning double-plays an all artificial infield would probably be a good idea. I hate the way it looks but winning is fun too.

Wet cold winter. Late snow. Beginning of season practice and then 23 games played on it in about a month. Was played under pretty wet conditions last sat.

We are an ag school that teaches and researches turf grass management. Using fake grass would be like coca cola corporate offices stocking pepsi products in the vending machines.

If Cohen

believed it helped our team play better defense, then so be it. Our baseball team isn't in the business of making our turf-grass management program look good.

Boy, I would hate to see us go to an artificial infield. The artificial home plate surface is bad enough.

Side note: I sent my 10 year old son to baseball camp this past summer. Cohen about had a heart attack when any kid got close to the infield. Sucked pretty bad for the kids. We will never go back.

I'll say

again, if Cohen thinks it makes a difference (positive), then go for it. Maybe I'm in the minority, in placing our team winning over grass/turf aesthetics.

It's hard to make that case considering no team in the country has turned more double plays that us the past few years. Sometimes as an AD, you have to overule the head coach though I'm sure Cohen put together a great power point.

Couple of thoughts..

We wouldn't have scored half the runs we did against Bama if not for the wet infield. 4-5 occasions that they botched a bunt because of the wet turf. I mentioned it then and will again now...when it dries out, our offensive approach will suck even worse.

I would not like an artificial infield.

I don't like the artificial home plate area that we have or base paths. LSU has artificial turf in their foul territory, but not around home plate or in the base paths Next time they are on SEC network take a look. Looks a lot better than ours.

How many games have we played at DNF this year? All of em right? It's been just a little wet with snow and enough rain to drown a frog. The field needs a break for a while.
