History. I know you guys don't think much of LT, but he did something that in my mind is that is monumental to our program. For 40 plus years we played what became murders row
[Ala., Aub.,LSU,and OM] back to back. this gave OM an advantage in my opinion as we were beaten up by the time we got to them. LT broke that up and I feel improved our ability to have a
much fairer chance at a better schedule.

Heard a few Rebs offer the rationale for changing rivals due to them being a "national brand", like LSU and unlike us. Do they mean "Kroger brand"?

Well national brands find a logo (mascot) and sticks with it.

I have to laugh when they claim this bogus stuff. “We are a national brand!” “Godfrey is a respected national sports journalist!” “We have a nationally respected _____!”

Newsflash um fans... ESPN confuses us. The public doesn’t confuse FedEx and UPS, They don’t confuse Ford and Chevrolet. Hell they don’t confuse CVS and Walgreens.

National brand my ***.

Not a good analogy. They made ours Kentucky

True, but we don’t live in delusional world where we think our football history and status is equal to, say, Alabama’s.

I’m glad we are paired with Kentucky. We have managed to beat them 8 of the last 9 years. The problem with Ole Miss is they cannot consistently beat Vandy, their east equivalent . . . let alone on of the elite teams in the east.

I think my dad won this same trophy back in the 80s for his good numbers selling insurance.

Let them do it. Doing away with a 100 plus year in state rivalry which they own seems like an Ole miss thing to do. Not to mention alienate 95% of their fan base that considers state as their only rival.

Another reason is that with the impending NCAA sanctions ahead and with State trending upward, MSU stands to gain ground in the overall series record, which now stands at 63-44-6 in their favor. Upcoming sanctions could give MSU the edge for at least the next 5 years and possibly 10, depending on how well ole miss screws up future coaching hires. Add to that they may very well have to vacate a couple of wins in the series and State could very well whittle it down significantly. If they can squirm out of the rivalry before this they can still always thumb their snotty noses at us and brag about that.

And also in reply to Dawg1969, another thing LT did was move the game away from Jackson and back onto campus which enhanced the atmosphere of the game. The last few Egg Bowls played in Jackson were not sell outs and the atmosphere was not that of a heated rivalry.
