Dribble handoffs

So many times Noah takes a handoff, and stalls while his defender moves laterally with him and Noah does not at all turn to face the basket and nothing is achieved, he slows his dribble and tosses it someone else. He’s not very fast, but many times he could turn and drive into the paint with the defender hugging his hip and draw fouls or find someone for a decent look.

We do not cut hard enough or move fast enough. We are moving at half speed. The guards have to step it up. If properly executed , it could lead to open look after open look or alley oop attempts.

Exactly. Half-assed cuts and lazy, inaccurate passing. No attention to detail on offense. Been this way for a while.

Yup even when we run some type of set it looks like we are going through a walk through at half speed. No intent. No crispness to it. It's weird

Yea this is a big problem. Cuts, screens, all of it seems like it’s being done for the sake of doing it rather than for the sake producing a clean look. There are some exceptions (Mag for instance), but by and large “ball finds energy” is not a concept most of the guys on this team seem to buy into.

Last year we got too many offensives for moving picks. I think this is the result of the over correction. Problems. We got problems.

There have been a few times this year when Noah broke his defenders ankles and looked very quick, but those instances have been rare and most of the time he looks slow and playing without purpose. He is not the player I expected and not the player we saw at UMass. I have no idea what the issue is, is he out of shape, not fully healthy, disinterested or just not suited to our style of play?

He’s not near the top of the list of problems.

Davis and Simpson seem to be in competition to see who can shoot more, Gavin can’t get involved in the offense, plenty of bodies but no scoring depth and Cliff keeps throwing the ball at the basket like at a boardwalk arcade not realizing it’s never going to go in.

As the only true PG on the team, Noah is the last guy to ***** about scoring.

I am very worried that Pike’s lack of structured offense and a pick up game freewheeling approach that certainly helps recruiting will be a disaster next year too. I said in another thread, wins don’t just happen. Players needs coaching.

He is likely not in prime condition and likely is a half step slower and lacking burst he used to have. If he can’t pop some step back 3s right now, he’s going to have a rough time almost every time out because he’s just not very strong or explosive. Problem is if your legs arent fully there that affects your shooting, too.

Perhaps the lack of structure is what drew Harper and Ace? I certainly hope not.

Not by itself, but yes. Remember they are both only here for a year to show their NBA chops. They didn’t come for Pike’s offensive sets and defense. They came to shoot.

Dylan’s mother wanted him here, is friendly with Ace who certainly got a golden handshake (legal now), etc. but make no mistake about their expectations

Unless you are Stef Curry, Luka Doncic, or James Harden, step back threes are terrible, low percentages shots, but we take a lot of them. We need to get out shooters open by setting screens for them instead of trying to hit these kind of shots.

They are extremely talented so I don’t have a problem with that per se. Harper, in particular, will make other players better. However, I really worry whether Pike can put a supporting cast in place so that one year is very successful in wins and losses. We need more pieces than I had originally thought.

Couldn’t agree more. Even if Gavin finds his game the roster isn’t strong top to bottom.

The top programs have much more talent overall than we’ll have next year even with the big 2 coming in.

Agreed on the quality of the step back 3 shot but we definitely don't take a lot of them

I disagree that is a bad shot. It’s a bad shot for poor shooters.

Every outside shot these guys take is a bad shot. That’s not their game, esp Davis and Simpson. They are slashers, not shooters.

This is the essence of the issue. Also, you can't have any kind of effective half court offense if you can't shoot.

Correct. So we resort to often running iso instead hoping the athleticism is enough. Too often the result is a step back jumper from poor shooters.

At least Williams knows his limitations. He doesn’t take jumpers at all.
