Draft Prospects This Year

I know we don't have the strongest senior class this year, but who do we think has a chance at getting drafted?

I saw one site had Stanley Morgan Jr. rated as high as the #8 WR, another had him at #24. Guessing he's probably our best bet. I've seen speculation the JD Spielman might test the waters, but I'd be surprised to see him leave unless he were the get a 1-2 round projection, which seems unlikely given his size.

OL, are Foster and Farmer possible late round fliers or UDFAs? I'm guessing at least Farmer gets signed somewhere even if he is undrafted.

Outside those, I can't think of much. Could Ozigbo play his way into a mid to late round pick? Seems like an intriguing prospect given his relatively low mileage for a senior RB and he's been impressive this year, not sure what 40 time he could pull off though and we all know how important that is, right or not.

Just because of the way the NFL values centers, IF I had to make a pick on who I think is most likely to get drafted I might say Farmer. Stan and Devine if drafted will probably be late round guys. I won't be completely surprised if we're shut out.

Morgan will be drafted, and I could see Farmer getting a look in the late rounds. If Ziggy gets a combine invite and runs in the 4.5's I could see him getting drafted late as well.

Ziggy will be playing on Sundays and be someone's starting RB
won't be drafted though...every year the running back moves farther back in the draft, and with so many no-name guys stepping up it makes no sense to wait a pick on a guy that will likely be replaced, often. Ziggy will be picked up in FA market, make a team, and be playing in his first year...he has little wear on his body...can catch out of the backfield, doesn't fumble, and is physical enough.

You just never know. If some GM likes him they might spend a late pick on him to be sure they get him. I was shocked when New England took Valentine in the 3rd round. That wasn't exactly a great get for them but they liked his quickness for his size. They cut him this preseason.

The NFL draft isn’t like recruiting rankings in the least bit. So much changes after the NFL season ends and GM’s start hitting the tape. It’s why you see so many “surprises” in the draft

GMs go into it with zero bias. They only care about if a guy will help them win unlike college coaches who recruit a kid for years. GM’s, though they are always watching, don’t recruit kids for years. They start to really put together a draft board in a much shorter time. As their needs are changing with FA, etc. much harder to plan for a future.

Having said all that, Oz is someone who could really be on the raise this spring

- 7.5 YPC in the B1G jumps out, while being a 1,000 yard rusher.
-his game tape is going to make a lot of GMs go crazy. The extra gear he has in the open field is amazing
- his ability to keep improving makes one think he hasn’t peeked

My amateur critique on Ozigbo in NFL would be his lateral movement could improve a bit, as well as his quickness hitting holes on inside runs.
He seems capable. Beyond that he’s a stud.

Morgan’s draft stock to me will entirely rest on his combine/pro day showing he can avoid the drops and run a quick enough time.

Farmer will be interesting to watch. I’m not good at OL evals (except when they’re obviously awful) and his move to center is so new.

Top to bottom IMO. Unfortunately nobody on the list is really an NFL impact player although a couple could have a nice career

1. Morgan (2nd to 5th?)
2. Ozigbo (anywhere from 4-6 I think?)
3. Foster (I think he's valued higher by NFL than in our current system (5-7)
4. Farmer (7th or UDFA)
5. Gifford (7th or UDFA) - better athlete and player then people give him credit for
6. Stoltenberg (7th or UDFA) - maybe higher if he shows he's fully recovered and really impresses during Pro day.

UDFA's - Freedom, Young - for both depends on prod day if they can catch someone's eye

Haven't paid much attention to one aspect of Ozigbo's play, and that is whether he can pick up the blitzer. That's one thing NFL teams put a premium on, that and ball security (I don't think he's fumbled much).

Also Oz had way less wear and tear than most college RBs. The way he's played and his newly found speed mean someone will take a chance late. NFL RB shelf life is short. They constantly need replaced.

Foster to me has been a disappointment— dude was rated high and has been a penalty machine.... Morgan will depend on 40 and combine

Kind of, I think you are making a broad brush statement that is based on perception and not actual numbers.

2016 - 22 RB/FB 7 taken rounds 1-4 15 taken rounds 5-7
2017 - 29 RB/FB 14 taken rounds 1-4 15 taken rounds 5-7
2018 - 22 RB/ FB 13 taken rounds 1-4 9 taken rounds 5-7

Mike McCarthy, is that you? Still trying to keep Aaron Jones off the field because he can’t pick up a blitz as well as Jamaal Williams?

One thing that I think McCarthy has finally figured out though is an electrifying back who is so-so at picking up a blitz can actually protect your HOF QB better than a dud RB who is amazing at picking up the blitz. If I respect the hell out of your running game, a Play action will protect my QB just as well as an additional blocker. Maybe even more so.

Having said that, Oz is solid at picking up the blitz

Morgan - 3rd round
Farmer - 5th round
Oz - 6th round
Gifford - FA

And when nobody from the defense is drafted in 2019, it will mark 3 straight drafts with only 1 Husker defender drafted in that time frame.

That is the current state of Husker football in a nutshell.

He has some limitations, his arms aren't super long, he's relatively short, and his foot speed is below average, IMO, but he's got good power and an anchor and can move people

I suspect he'll do well in a more standard pro style offensive line with tighter splits and less pulling than Austin/Frost want. He seems to reach a lot for blocks because his feet don't get him where he needs to be in our system.

Yes, I'll very interested in his 40 time, I'm guessing now it's a ceiling of 4.57 and a base run of 4.48, he looks fast. I think he gets drafted.
