Should we have fouled? Or play D and get a stop and go for the 3 to tie? No right answer here but I was surprised we went to the fouling strategy after Poythress hit those FTs to pull us within 3.

I thought we would play good defense, don't foul, and get the ball back with at least 6 or more seconds to get a 3 point shot to tie the game. When we fouled, and they made a free throw, the game was over.
Was that good coaching, I don't think so, but a lot of posters on here will say it was great.

But what if they score? Then it's over, more than likely down 5 or 6 with 6 seconds left. In a perfect world they wouldn't score but that's not how it works. It was the right move

agree with OP, fouling was dumb. one made FT turns it into a 2-possession game, and that is what happened. No, you trust your defense and use the clock as an ally. We had a better chance of stopping them from scoring with good defense than their missing 2 free throws.

Don't try to teach logic to all these arm chair coaches.

Cal must've thought we wouldn't get the stop but the odds of a player missing both free throws are pretty slim. Funny thing is Butler was just faced with the same decision against Virginia. They fouled but Virginia was on a break away so not sure what they wanted to do.

I like fouling, and in the past I have been critical of cal because he does the opposite.

However, after that we didn't go near fast enough to try and score.

You have to foul there and extend the game. Otherwise, you leave yourself with so little time that, even if you get a stop, the other team can foul with under 5 seconds left before you can even get off a three. I think if there's a 10-second or more differential between shot and game clock, you play it out. But less than that, you have to foul.

Good point. But you can still make the first and miss the second and get a tip in. Like I said in the original post their is no right answer.

Exactly right. Every coach does this in the same scenario. You are extending the game and hoping they miss some free throws. If you wait, and they score, which they prolly will bc you are trying to not foul, game is over. Not ideal either way, but it is what you have to do to extend the game and hope to hit some threes and easy layups.

Wouldn't have had to worry if UK's good free throw shooters had made their first half free throws. Murray missed one. Tyler missed one. Willis missed the front end of a 1 and 1.

That's four points.
