So this basketball site has the Huskers as the favorite in 1 of 20 Big Ten games this year.

Of course, the projected conference record is 6-14, meaning that we're bound to pull a few mild upsets over the course of the year. Math says that if you have a 49 percent chance to win every game, you're not as bad a team that has a 19 percent chance to win every game, but both teams are underdogs in every game.

Second, ESPN's FPI power rankings say that Nebraska is the favorite in 0 of its final 5 games this year.

Again, the projected record is 5.6-6.4 (MATH!), so we're due at least 1.6 upsets.

Bottom line for me: I'll expect nothing except heartache this year, aside from volleyball making it to the Elite Eight.

All else is gravy.

Double dose of reality. The sites you used have virtually no idea of what will really happen. IF you believe those sites, go and scrape together ALL of your assets and head to Council Bluffs. Lay it all on the line on what those sites are telling you. ALL of their predicitions for basketball are based on UNKNOWNS.. It would be foolish to expect Hoiberg to win the conference in his first year. Expecting him to only win 6 games may be equally as foolish given the success he had at Iowa State.

As far as football goes, I think we have a very good chance of winning 2-3 games yet this year and the odds of us winning NONE of those games is VERY slim. Hell, after watching several of Iowa's games and then watching Illinois upset Wisconsin, ALL of our games are winnable IF we show improvement down the stretch like we did last season. Don't jump just yet.

I have my car titles in hand, and I'm going to get my closing papers. I can just drive down to Riverside from here. Thanks for the tip, and wish me luck!!! :)

My only real point was that I will be happy with every single win by Frost, Hoiberg, Cook, Williams, etc., no matter the score or circumstances. We're not in position to expect victory in football or men's basketball. Peace, Mr. Fritz.

Well I guess one could look at the brightside, keep expectation low and anything above looks amazing. Neb football would be better off if nobody predicted us to do anything this year.

I'll be mildly disappointed if we don't get to 7 wins. I'll be moderately disappointed if we don't get to 6 wins. I might jump off the barn if we don't win another this year. We should be able to take one at least from Purdue or Indiana.

We have issues at many key positions: AM is still not 100%. Vedral is possibly injured? WR was not in pads this week. Mo is off the team. Without our major weapons, we will struggle the rest of the year. Like everyone else, I HOPE others step up.

I agree, I said beginning of the year we need to see a sign that we are heading in the right direction and gaining ground. With our schedule being easier this year I thought we needed to be able to get to at min 7 win to show progress. Now I will say MN and Wisc are better than most anticipated. So I am willing to lower the bar and say 6 should be bare min. Anything under that should be considered a massive failure. Frost would need to take a very hard look at assistants and schemes and probably make some adjustments. There is no valid reason year 2 this team shouldn't be able to get to 6 wins. As of this moment I can't say any aspect of this team looks better compared to the back half of last year.

Here's my problem with the injuries. We kept hearing good things about some of the walk on WRs on this team and yet we don't see them. We heard good things about Brody Belt. He got in and he looked darned good albeit against Minnesota's backups. I just wonder sometimes IF we're too worried about having a home run threat playing at skill positions instead of maybe playing somebody who knows the job and can do it. Callahan got his eyes opened up by Peterson at WR. He wasn't a burner. He was a smart kid who would block, catch the ball and make plays when we needed them. Likewise Pelini and Riley had a couple of walk on WRs step up and do a nice job of getting open and catching the ball. Is Walters too fixated on the name on the jersey?

The media or ESPN has no idea of the ceiling of this team. This is the most unknown commodity in the big ten. I’ll take coaching for the over on wins.

I'll take 7-5. I think we beat Indiana and Purdue. I also think Iowa is a winnable game.

No chance against Iowa. We should be able to beat Ind & Pur but we’ll see.

Again, these were before the year predictions. The only game I’ve missed so far was I had us losing to NW. So now I think we’ll at least get to a bowl.

Iowa is having their own O line struggles. They lost one of their better linemen for the year and their new starters aren't very good. The key for me in that game is IF Chinander will go balls to the walls to get pressure on Stanley. We've got to get better before then but IMO we have enough talent to beat them.

Good post sir.

However, just my silly opinion, I think the blackshirts are at least somewhat better than last year. We don't give up endless opponents 3rd & longs over & over & over like we did all year long last year. For me, that's a real-deal improvement. Oh, they're a million miles away from being great "but" I think they do deserve some credit.

Everything else on our team is wayyyyyy worse than last year. It's a rough damn business.

Idk, I’ve only seen a few of their games but their defense looks nasty.

Absolutely shut down ISU, Mich, & P St. I just don’t see us scoring more than 20 points on them, max.

We''ll get to find out. It's the beauty of actually playing the games. For me, this year can go one of two ways and IF we win the next 2 I think we have a shot at beating Iowa.

6-14 wouldn't surprise me at all, but I also wouldn't be surprised if we do better than that. The roster was pretty thoroughly turned over, so we're kind of an unknown. Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about going dancing or anything, just might be better (or worse, to be fair) than people think given how little we know

I'm very excited to watch the new-look Hoiskers this year, regardless of record.

B1G is a great hoops league, and it'll be exciting to see some run & gun offense out there.

I do wish we played more competitive non-con games, though.

I fully expect Hoiberg to have a more successful career than Frost when it’s all said & done.

And that’s not a knock on Frost. I think Hoiberg will have us rolling by year 2. Maybe even flirting with the tourney by that year as well.

More than half (78 of 130) FBS team will play in bowls.
Less than 20 percent (68 of 351) Division I basketball teams will make it to The Dance.
I look at the Big Ten's bowl games this way:
  • the Quick Lane, the Pinstripe, the Armed Forces and the Redbox Bowls are like the NIT
  • the Holiday and the Music City are like having a low seed in the NCAA
  • the Gator, the Outback and the Citrus are like having a high seed in the NCAA
  • the Rose (this year) is like getting a #2 seed in the NCAA
  • the College Football Playoffs (Peach and Fiesta this year) are like getting a #1 seed in the NCAA
For us this year, the Quick Lane and the NIT would work just dandy.

To better decades!

Haven't thought about 2020 yet, but 5-7 is very realistic for this yr. (God forbid 4-8 is still out there). I think we would have a fighting chance to beat Purdue & Maryland if they were home games, but we pee down our legs on the road. Iowa & Wisc. will be bloodbaths to suffer through.

The schedule next year is tougher. We could be a better team and end up with a worse record than this year. I'm not looking for much until Adrian's senior year.

Did you actually look at the non-con including the pre-season tourney. It's not that bad of a schedule. No worse than other years IMO. We need to build some confidence. The thing I like is that we're going to have multiple offensive weapons versus years past.

Im with you. I think 5-7 is likely. After my USA breakdown I said 6 to 8 wins. After CU 5 to 7. I think with all the injuries 4 to 6 is the most realistic outcome.
