This guy was obviously not thinking clearly to imagine that plan would work. But he did confess and figuratively fall on his sword so he's still ahead of the cheaters that havn't confessed.
He was caught on video cheating, he had no other choice but to confess unless he wanted to try the wasn’t me song and dance.

I don't find his confession all that noble seeing as how he was caught on a security camera and only fessed up after being shown the video.

This was not a harmless joke to play on his group for a few laughs.

It was clearly a premeditated scheme to collect a jackpot and possible low score prize money.
Member/Member events at most golf clubs have high-dollar entry fees and high-dollar payouts.

This guy had to sneak out onto the golf course, draw a mark on a golf ball to identify it as being his, place it into the hole, return to the clubhouse, concoct the story about his sick grandmother, convince his group that he might have to take a private phone call, run ahead to the next tee to fake a shot, and then allow someone else in his group find his ball in the hole. And then, with a straight face, act surprised.
Dang! That sounds like an episode of Columbo!

The only reason we are hearing about this is because he got caught.
There is something seriously wrong with a person that would actually try to pull this off.

This might have been the only time he ever tried to perform his Golf Magic, but I would bet that he's pulled a few other slick moves in his business and personal life.

I think anyone who has played in golf scrambles has had doubts on the prize winners.
Funny now but back when big screen flat screen tvs were first coming out the scramble had one for the straightest drive. I piped one about 230 and 2 feet off the drawn line. Lost to a woman who topped one 15 feet but right on the line!

Same scramble was won by a body shop group in front of us who were enjoying their beverages and all over the course. No way I could imagine they shot 57.

However, in another I was recruited to play by a client. 3 of our 4 were over 70 so I was not optimistic and looking for the beer cart. We shot 18 under. Birdied every hole. These old guys were awesome off the super senior tees and on the greens.
When we were announced as winners you could hear the murmurs “ what?” “who” “how”? I’m sure the others thought we pre prepped our scorecard.
