For Valentine’s Day last month, my wife was able to get reservations for a very high-end restaurant, generally acknowledged as one of the best in the world. It wasn’t cheap at $700 each, but we were looking forward to the experience.

The food was incredible for each of the 9 courses provided. The service was excellent, generally speaking, and at the end of the meal they provided a nice departing gift, however, we did note a few things that surprised us over the course of the meal.

The Valentine’s Day menu was supposed to start with a glass of Dom Perignon, but instead, they served a rose champagne. Very nice, but not as advertised. We noticed a few different times the servers reached across us to retrieve a dish or refill our water glasses. A couple of times, they started to take our plates before we had finished. For one course, the server shaved an extremely generous portion of truffle but was a bit sloppy, with a couple of pieces even falling on the table. In places like this, presentation is nearly as important as preparation. Still, we thoroughly enjoyed the experience, but afterwords discussed how this restaurant compared to others we have been to.

When we got back home, my wife called the manager and told him about our experience and thought he might appreciate the feedback. He expressed his appreciation for her feedback, apologized for the shortcomings, and said the restaurant would refund the full cost of the dinner and ship a bottle of Dom Perignon to us. Two days later, our credit card was credited in full. We received the bottle of Dom Perignon 2006 today.

We certainly didn’t request, nor expect any sort of adjustment to our bill, as we enjoyed the food and overall experience. It just shows the restaurant’s committment to total excellence and satisfaction.

I'm just in shock of $700 each for a night out dinner, even if it is for V-Day.

Good for Soaring Eagle and wife and glad the restaurant manager doing the right thing.

Once did one of those $1000 dollar type dinners for my wife and I for our anniversary. We were extremely disappointed, but never thought to say anything to see about getting it covered.

Good on that owner.

Nothing more annoying than a table full of fat slobs who ***** about their food to try to get a free meal.
It was actually a sexy milf and her hot 20 yr old daughter.....killed me not to throw them a dessert or something.

There's always that one set of poors that has to complain. Sigh
One of my former employees and her mom would go to restaurants eat and then complain to get it either free or free desert or what ever they could

the place where my son chefs has the same policy...but it's a swanky place called The Carnegie House....management doesn't want to risk a bad review

I'm a poors. I'll do $100 each. $700 each, that's not my style. At all.
My wife would be pissed if I spent that much on a dinner or a present. We stuff that money towards the mortgage - kids - retirement - travel fund. Chipotle burrito and dove chocolate....and she’s polishing the knob with a smile. I’m pretty lucky

You can't spend that much at Red Robin!
The funny thing about those uber expensive 73.5 course meals is that you usually leave hungry because 37 of the courses are the size of a corn flake and the others are palette cleansers. Plus, the alcohol they include, if they include it, is usually something I wouldn't normally drink if it was free. I'll pay decent money for a really good steak and really good whiskey. I'll splurge on good seafood at times. Dom Perignon can take a hike, and he can take his single-herbed-crouton-3-leaf-salad-with-truffle-oil-and-champagne-vinegrette-course with him.

Pretty much. They describe the meals and it sounds amazing, then they deliver the meals, and you're left thinking "They fuc#ed me good..." We did the "wine tasting" with ours..... they picked the wrong wines with the snacks they served us. We learned our lesson and never did something like that again. It was in the Cayman's and now we stick to the local places when we go there and get better food for a lot less.

Here here! My buddy went and did one of those high end sushi deals in NYC. It had gold flakes on it.

My son works in NYC and consults with a bunch of Michelin rated restaurants. He recommends the following:

  • If you want to impress the lady
    • Tiffany's Blue Box Cafe
    • The Polo Bar at Ralph Lauren
  • If you want to hang with athletes
    • Quality Meats/Italian/Eats, and they are opening another one soon.
  • If you want old school
    • Keens ( I took him there after the Bowl Game and it made an impression on him)
  • If you want a drink
    • Ocar Wilde's- He went there last week and had a florescent Absinthe cocktail. Said it was pretty cool, but not a fan.

But would you spring for this:

Years ago I attended a private business dinner of 15 people at Clyde's of Georgetown. One of the junior members of the group ordered a round of King Louie after he had ordered about 15 bottles of DP during the dinner. Needless to say....the person footing the bill was not pleased.

I have actually had a nice drink of this. Funny story, but I was holding a company dinner in Louisville and spent about 5k for our gathering. I was sitting at the bar afterwards talking with the staff and getting our final bill in order. UofL was playing FSU on a Thursday night and we were watching the end of the game. I said that if UofL wins you have to treat us to a drink of the Louis, sure enough, UofL won and the bartender poured us drinks. He said that once the bottle is empty you send it back and they replenish it.

I have not been to Peter Lugars but I can't believe it could be any better. I live in Buck's County and I get steaks a local butcher shop who tells me that they supply Peter Lugar's with their meat. Not sure if it's true, but their meat is exceptional and every steak is hand cut in front of you.

You can get a great steak at many places......and you can a mediocre steak at many places including Lugar's.
