Just keeps getting better and better. I hope he can actually coach. Just our luck, he'll screw around and get beat by Jackson State.
If it gives the team a little swagger it couldn't hurt. If there is anything I noticed under Croom, it's that your teams seemed too nice at times. That doesn't mean your team has to play dirty and pick up personal fouls, but there wasn't that big of a mean streak or swagger under Croom with a few exceptions, one being the 4th quarter of the Egg Bowl 2007. Even in that game though, your team didn't pick up that killer instinct until the very end of the game. You need something to get that back.
I think the whole "landshark" thing that our defense picked up is a little bit silly when you think about it on its own (much like the Dog Pound Rock when you see some white boy Orientation leader trying to do it), but the landshark thing sure gave the defense an identity and a swagger late in the year.

very true.
my orientation leader's name was Tekila (no kidding) and at one of the countless meeting we had, that happened. it was mildly disturbing.
of course a lot of the kids in our group were from out of state and we didnt know what the hell the guy was doing, but when we got to out first football game a few weeks later, it made a little more sense. i remember when they would do the rock on the field right before kickoff, then some ruling made them do it on the sideline, which actually got the student section more into it.
i personally think its a great idea to bring it back!

It does give confidence to the team just before kick-offs, that is particularly important on kick coverage/special teams - which is all about determination and confidence.
I remember watching an MSU game several years ago on ESPN with Mike Tirico as one of the announcers. At one point during the game, the team did the DPR on the sidelines before taking the field for a kickoff. Tirico then made a comment that the DPR was "the best thing he'd ever seen" or something to that affect. I say bring it back.

out of the game, the DPR is a great way to get the crowd pumped up right before play resumes after your team scores (which pretty much always triggers a tv timeout). it has to get the defense pumped too, right before they go back onto the field.
in its day, the DPR was awesome. the entire fanbase bought into it, even the blue hairs. the atmosphere was electric when it was right. of course, it hasn't been right for the 5-8 years. maybe kenzaki can come back to lead it.

Seriously though, while I do hate it and will most assuredly make fun of it, I say smart move on Mullen's part. Swagger is good and that's a good way of trying to bring a little swagger back to his program.
I believe that was Kirk Herbstreit that said "that is the best thing going in college football." He's broadcasting with Lee Corso.?

that game and the auburn game that year for the best one. i was @ both and they were an absolute blast. i remember the weather was ****** at the beginning of the egg bowl that year... that video always gives me goosebumps...

all kinds of wicked, childish **** and people think it is cool. For the record, USC didn't do it in the regular season, hell, they barely smiled after the Oregon State loss until the rest of the season was in the can. Likewise, there has never been any sort of tradition like that aside from Tommy Trojan sticking his f*cking sword in the middle of the field before the game... that pisses off a lot of folks. OM's landshark thing only started after we began to win, had we been doing that while we were busy losing to Wake, Vandy, and USCar, I am sure there would have been some criticism.
I have always thought that things like the DPR were fairly harmless and sort of have a place in a sporting event, which is at least partially about entertainment anyway. If it is not being done in the middle of field with cigars and hookers, I could really give a happy crap.

I in no way meant to say that we should be celebrating anything at 3 wins (unless its your first 3 games). I agree winning allows you to do these things. I don't like people celebrating sacks while losing by 20.

I am not sure that the bells ever actually affected the outcome of a game. I went to a ton of games between State and Ole Miss and State and LSU from 1966 to 1989 and we were like 15-7-0 while LSU was like 14-9-0. However, they are your bells and you are welcome to them.
The DPR doesn't affect me one bit. If I don't want to see it, I can look somewhere else. Unlike the bells which I still hear in my sleep and I haven't been to a State game in twenty years.
BTW, I am pretty much in the old fart category and I know a lot of my contemporaries complain about **** like this, but I just can't see it. If they want to dance, **** it... let 'em dance.
