It was only a matter of time really. Really nice/good guy from all accounts, but too nice to be a head coach at this age. He acts too much like a friend to players (hence why he is a good recruiter), which usually doesn't work when it comes time to coach, especially with the type of kids he recruits. He will undoubtedly land somewhere as a recruiter, will likely work his way up again while learning the actual coaching ropes (which he never really did, other than in AAU ball...not a coincidence that is how his Memphis teams play), and then will have another chance when he is older and can command more respect.

I think Pastner would be better off at a Christian college in NAIA. Don't mean that in a derogatory way, at all. Just knowing his beliefs and his way of doing things, he needs to be in a situation where kids will be more like-minded and willing to listen to him.

Granted, he won't make near what he makes now - but he might be happier and more successful

Yeah I don't know if I feel very sorry for that guy. I know this isn't how he wanted it to be but his bank account, while already far better than most, is going to be very large.
Plus, wherever he goes he will make a good paycheck as an assistant and not have the heavy weight of running the show.
Win win.

Memphis may be and probably is the worst job possible for a coach or person like Pastner . He is too wholesome for an environment that has too much street influence on the players . You need a tough and strong willed coach at Memphis . Pastner would have had a better chance of success in a place that had little outside influence , some Midwestern college that lacked a large ghetto to deal with . He still needs seasoning but he should have never taken that job , had he and Memphis listened to Cal then it could have been avoided .

So how good was his recruiting? Unless he had a relative on staff, I'm not seeing a lot of success there.

With recruiting, its supposed to improve each year you are in charge. It appears its getting worse quickly.

Didn't Cal suggest Robic for the job when he left? We would have had Pastner on this staff, and it looks like we got the better result.

Not sure how good of a recruiter he is now..Memphis really screwed the pooch on him..In 13 gave him an extension through 2022 at 2.5m a year...they will fire and pay him 10m at the end of the year..Now who can they get?

Coaching is not an easy gig. It's not for everyone. A lot of guys can play for years and still not cut it in the coach's chair. Some guys can be great assistants for years and then flop when they get their turn to run the show.

It takes a special breed. It's like being a teacher, manager, counselor, and spokesperson all rolled into one. And even worse, every game two coaches oppose one another, so one of them is going to fail no matter how well they prepared. High level sports is a rough place to make a living as a coach. That's why the good ones carry a high price tag.

Memphis won't be bothered by Pearl's NCAA transgressions, and Pearl isn't loving being a distant second fiddle to Auburn football.
