I was never a huge fan of it either.
Ditto. I would think the coaches prefer their bench players to be studying the game instead of choreographing their next skit.
Really? We sometimes justify and seem to be ok with dude's getting pulled over for driving on a suspended license, smoking pot, child porn, etc..but the last 5 guys off the bench having some fun, this is where we draw the line????

Per someone in the Twitter comments, the footage is from two years ago. Not sure if this continued last year under Miles so it may already be a dead issue.
Regardless, I can't see a similar thing happening under Hoiberg. He's a consummate professional and I envision his teams reflecting that.

Spot on tuco. Heavens forbid some players that realistically stand no chance to get in the game (yes I did watch every single Nebraska basketball game last year) have a little fun at end of bench.
I can’t fathom caring about this at all.
It's all a matter of context, but I don't believe anybody feels this is somehow worse than violating the law. It's just that the counter argument often tends to be "kick them off the team and make them pay dearly for it for the rest of their lives." Worse case scenario for screwing around on the bench is an assistant coach tells them to "knock it off" and "keep your head in the game".

Well considering they do their thing after big plays or posterizing dunks, I would say their heads are very much in the game. Now if they dropped to the floor and did the bobsled thing as the point guard was dribbling the ball at the top of the key as the team ran a set, then that would be a valid point.
The only time “kick him off” or “ruin their life” has come up is with Washington and his child porn charges. So let’s not make the reaction to those other incidents it into more than it is.

I love it. Yes, it brings attention to themselves and I do wonder if a player who is joking around on the bench would be instantly ready to play if their name was called. And the coaches from the Don Meyer or Bob Knight school would never have it.
However, team chemistry and cohesion is crucial to the sport of basketball. When the players who are not getting to play show that kind of spirit and support to what is going on, that's huge. I believe it helps the performance and confidence of the team. You generally only see this kind of bench behavior from a team that is "on a roll". I believe this type of thing builds as a team is getting on a hot streak over the course of several games and helps the team continue that hot streak. As far as being ready to play, most players aren't ready to play after sitting the whole game anyway so this type of fun stuff may be better than sitting around feigning interest.
So I like it. Is it ideal? No, but it's a far cry better than the "who gives a sh*t" unless the coach is watching attitude that a lot of bench players exhibit. As a member of a team, you can be a drain on the energy (energy vampire) and just suck the fun & life out of the team. I hated being around teams where the players that played gave a damn and the players who didn't play pretended to. I'm no fan of Tim Miles, but that guy had teams quit on him including last year's team (until they pulled out of it after losing some players). At the least, bench players clowning around is the lesser of two evils.

I suppose the Husker Volleyball Team should also get a lecture on bench decorum as well.
I don’t recall a single bench mob skit happening last year. It was already put to bed by Miles.
Maybe I'm in the minority here but I loved it. It is college kids having fun. These kids will probably never make it in the pros and are doing their best to have fun and support the team. I say GO FOR IT.
Last year I think the roster was so thin that just about everybody thought their name might get called - and they weren't far off.
To me it's not a big deal one way or the other. Most of these guys passed on a chance to start at a D2 or D3 school just to show up and practice their butt off every day, so a long leash seems in order. I think 127 media timeouts and "play under review" breaks come a lot closer to "making a mockery of the game" than anything that's happening on the bench.

For clarification. I don’t really care one way or the other. I posted because I thought it was noteworthy that an acclaimed national speaker and best selling author with ties to many prominent basketball stars and a national following posted a clip featuring Nebraska basketball to frame this discussion.

No, the volleyball program actually wins conference and national championships. It is the flagship program in the Athletic Department in terms of consistently competing at a national level for an extended period of time. They can do whatever they want because they have earned it. Don’t mess with John Cook. Winking

People on this site, who make it a practice of following children on Twitter and hang on their every word, forget that these college players are are still young folks. Team chemistry is as important as anything in sport, and as a recruit I would rather be on a team having fun than being screamed at Bobby Knight style. (cue the responders who will take this last sentence to extremes and act as if I'm saying that professionalism, dedication, strife, and success play no part-- of course they do, but there is room for both-- otherwise we wouldn't say that you "play" a sport)
Of course it can become a distraction, and that's when you tell them to cool it. But let them have fun. It certainly didn't hurt the volleyball team.
I also doubt Miles put the kibosh on it last year. It probably had more to do with the mix of kids.

People who follow kids on Twitter is creepy. Maybe I'm just old school, it's weird.
Where in this thread does it suggest that anyone is following kids on twitter. This was on the twitter feed of a very well known author and national speaker that is hosted by numerous athletic programs and national/international businesses.
