Does the media dislike Pope?

Am I crazy in thinking the national media is has hit quite a bit harder than even when Billy G was our coach. Between the potshots from individual members of the media or how many members who bring up the $22 million blunder and, increasingly, the Yaxel situation.

I don’t care for Pope, I admit that much, but he seems like a good guy? I’ve heard BYU fans claim he’s a tool and not as nice as he lets on, but I haven’t seen anything that suggests that. Even his peers, other coaches don’t appear to show much like for the dude. It’s weird.

My theory is people simply don’t respect him as a coach and it’s easy to fire at a guy who won’t hit back. But perhaps the media and other coaches know more than we do.

No shocker that most of the complaints are coming from posters less than a year old. Must’ve peed off the Monday Nitro crew pretty badly.

How does anyone respect him as a coach that is knowledgeable? It doesn't explain why media takes shots at him. I think it is more of a shot at UK when we are so clearing down and not likely to get up anytime soon. When Mashburn starts a conversation about what fixes UK something is clearly wrong.

I do not think they dislike him.
I think the media is just not enamored.
He is too vanilla to create media buzz.
It is a personality and style thing.
I loved him, but Jerry Claiborne was much the same way.
He was not a media darling ...

Pope has done some stupid things that will likely catch up at some point. You have to maneuver and be gracious with guys you need help from. He’s fumbled it there in ways. Pope has some ways that are off putting. And yes BYU BW’s made comments about it when he left. Some of them were fine with it and glad.

It’s a Mitch hire FFS. Why anyone thinks this is going is beyond me but it’s probably due to Kentucky guy talks sweet nothings and they go warm. Definitely not related to anything of substance he doesn’t have anything.

Yea a lot of these guys are just fans of his from the beginning and can’t let it go. We’ve got Kentucky legends that have spoken out, contributors that have made comments, media thinks he’s mid, his record is low-mid, his recruiting is F. They’ll just have to figure it out in their own time, not everyone picks up quick, some have motives attached to fandom and some just don’t catch anything quickly. Lots of signals Mark is pretty much done here barring something crazy.

Stage is too big. It’s been said over and over again and he doesn’t know how to deal with the media at this level… no arrogance just aw shucks attitude

No, I think there's something to it. I think they see Pope as kind of a dork. He's definitely not the cool kid in class and with the on court disappointment this season he's an easy target. He can't be cringe AND lose. Dykes, Bilas, and Vitale (speaking of cringe, that's the unholy trifecta) have all loved taking their shots at him.

Other coaches don't respect him. Pitino props him up because he played for him and Cal loves that he was his successor knowing he will fall flat. That's it when it comes to "love" from the coaching fraternity that I've seen, and both have ulterior motives. Oats and Golden actively HATE him for "poaching" players (but fine when Arkansas did it to us I guess). I have to say the video of Golden smirking and cheering during the SEC Tournament after Pope was arguing a call that went against us made me want to see someone slap the taste out of the little pricks mouth. What Vandy did to them just wasn't enough for me.

Which gets to the main point. Pope isn't feared or respected by anyone, the root cause of all his other problems and why it's best to move on sooner rather than later.

I think the media doesn’t respect because of the way he acts.

He's really just a dig duffus that they don’t take seriously.
