It was just extended last year (prematurely imo) so obviously no need. That being said, I've never been a believer in a coach needing a certain number of years on a deal. I believe it even less so in this age of portal where rosters change all the time.

Marshall let their coaches contract run out in a year they won 10 games and the Sun Belt. They wanted to make a change and they let it run out. Freeman just got a 4 year extension at ND to push his contract out to 6 years. That means ND let it run down to 2 years. I've seen FCS schools do similar. In this age of schools paying players (NIL coming from the school) it's even more important to be prudent with resources (as it should always be anyway).

Losing the Rate ends the idea.
Win it all next year then it's a good idea 😁

Yes if he beats State Penn and at least 1 other team he has never beaten, and/or if we win at least 10 games.

Which ever comes first before his contract is up.

The main problem is Rutgers alumni and even the current student body are not into sports or worse anti sports. We are more like Purdue than Penn State. That makes it difficult to attract and pay a top coach, let alone build a top tier football program. Schiano has proven that he can do it here where every other coach has failed. He is a NJ bred guy with many connections in the football community, a good recruiter and the players love him. I am disappointed with this year's results, but a win against Illinois and a win at the bowl game and I would be pretty happy. So if the real question here is Would you fire Schiano, at this point I would vote No.

I’ll just say out loud what we’re all thinking. Want an extension? Beat State Penn. It’s that simple. Give us, the fans, the win we want. No reason to sugarcoat it, beat them and we can talk about an extension.

I gave him an extension after both the Illinois and KSU games.
And will after the 2025 spring game too. If you count spring games as wins against conference opponents his Big10 win total in such is even more fantastic.

Just wait, $22M payroll will level the playing field. Schiano’s ability to evaluate talent is going to shine!

This ain’t college football any more.

The low 20s is the cap for entire athletic departments not just football, although I believe schools can allocate it anyway they want.

The expected ranges I’ve read are 12-14 or 15-17 for football.

You don’t have to spend up to the cap but I haven’t read anything about a minimum you have to spend as well.

Being in the P2 should make it more feasible to find the money in the budget as opposed to other conferences.

Schiano was and still is tho de facto AD. Doesnt matter who the new titular AD he endorses will be, Schiano will keep almost every penny of the allocation.

Rutgers and college athletics in general needs a DOGE like initiative to reduce the never ending growth in wasteful spending. Did you ever look at the size of the football staff? What is it going to cost for Schiano to find a competent DC who wants to work with him? The idea that he has a long list of guys dying to join his staff seems like a fallacy given how long and how many counters it took to get KC to come on board. How many basketball coaches these days? When does RU hire a GM?

Yeah a lot of the waste falls on donors who I guess have nothing better to waste their money on, but it is still a terrible look to have a pay someone a big buyout to get them to leave. If you bring the entire amount of wasteful spending by universities in general into the picture, I don't doubt that it might give the federal government a run for its money on a relative basis. Its amazing that through all of the student loan forgiveness debacle no one ever shined the spotlight on the root cause of the problem which is the rampant increase in the cost of a college education.

How much you think that bowl game cost Rutgers last night? Looked like not many fans in the stand but we brought the entire band. Do they still make you eat large ticket allotments or does ESPN pick up the freight for these made for TV events? Without them, these games can't stand on their own and will be gone soon given the CFP expansion.
This information will be published in the next athletic department financial report.

Rutgers lost about $1 million on the Pinstripe Bowl. Rate Bowl likely similar loss - lower ticket sales revenues, higher travel expenses, but zero coach bonus expenses because Rutgers lost the Rate Bowl.

And people say all Rutgers fans love the Pinstripe Bowl! 🤣

He’s being compensated appropriately for his performance. Last year his salary was tied with Bielema for 11th of 18 coaches in the conference. Based on our conference record, were tied for 10th. He’s not going anywhere. He wins more, he gets paid more.

You say he’s not the best in game coach and I agree.
Really good coach overall! Why? Not arguing just trying to understand what is good?
Player development?
Recruiting?
Defense?

He is a bad coach and an embarrassing coordinator tied to the largest scandal in college football history! Thrown out of Tampa. Thrown out of Ohio State. Why????

The excuses have run out. New AD new Head coach
I see your stupidity isn't limited to the hoops board. Congrats.

To change the discussion a little as Rutgers will eventually look for an AD. Remember this person who was seriously in the running before Rutgers hired Julie Herman?

I thought he was really solid, before they chose Julie.
