Does Cal know

Whether you would like to admit it or not, winning the NCAAT involves a GREAT deal of pure unadulterated LUCK!! UK is NOT a lucky team. We almost never get good bounces or good calls, and it defies the laws of probability. There have been several recent years when we should have cut down the nets, and someone put a lid on the basket! (classic example, 1984) I cannot explain it, but I do not believe it to be random chance.

Based on what I have just said, THIS year's team is exactly the type that COULD win it all. IF THEY GET LUCKY. They have all the moving parts, but we need the right bounces, the right draw, no untimely injuries, made free throws!, the right officials, and a dramatic increase in our overall basketball IQ. Amazingly, it could happen. I wouldn't bet the house though....
And the best team doesn't always win the NCAAT. It does take a lot of things going your way to get it done. It could be seeding, teams getting upset that could pose a threat, strength of bracket, etc.

how disgruntled many or most of the fans are? If so, what if anything will he do about it?

What will he do? nothing any different than he always has done. He coaches his way and always will. And I dare say he knows more than the fans do.

So you agree that it's been at least 5 years since Cal built a team that looked worthy of a title, and that's my issue. We can "what-if" all day long - a bad call here, an injury there, etc - but we pay our coach a ton of money to build teams that scare people. We haven't done that in a long time now, and we have to stop looking to the next year's freshmen as the saviors of the program. Talk about being realistic - that's no longer it.
2017 is not 5 years ago dope. That's 3 seasons before this one. Last years team was decent enough to make title run as well. We entered as the best 2 seed and made it to elite 8 and lost. That was last year. Make a little bit of sense when u make a statement please.

Yeah that's actually what I'm waiting for next - him to start ripping into fans and defending players, making it look like we're dumping on them.

I actually don't have a single problem with any players, and never have. My issue is with Cal and his new, lowered expectations every year. Until we win another title I'm not interested in next year's class, or getting upset at officiating, or anything else other than the product he puts on the court this year. He didn't even bother filling out the roster - we have baseball players to practice against for crying out loud.

When is the last time he fielded a team that looked like it was built to win it all? With what he's paid, that should happen every 2-3 years - it's been 5 and counting...

Oh stop. The 2017 team was the best team in the country had they not ran into rooferee. How easy you forget. Put down the bourbon. Hyperbole at it's finest.

This feels like 06 where some want him gone, some want him forever, but most want him to wake up to the unrest and start making changes.

Cal isn't close to losing the fan base. Thats just dumb. But if he keeps on with this stuff he will. Hes got to make changes that put UKs goals first. Losses will happen. But people are pissed rignt now because those losses feel like a preventable byproduct of the system he's set up.
Could happen sooner, remember microwave?

Nope.... ain't nobody stealing his joy...
Let Rupp keep being more and more empty and let some big boosters become disgruntled.. then maybe he might care but probably not.. He has made enough money to tale care of his grandchildren's grandchildren and he talks about UK's current NBA payroll of half a billion.. Fans are the last of his concern I would imagine..

His focus is being able to get 5 star kids year after year and getting them to the NBA. Going deep in the tournament is secondary and anything after that is cheese on the cake. Does not seem like the type that worries about the fans much. Wants to do good for them but not a priority.

The type of players he generally gets and the quality depth he normally has gives him an advantage if he used it the best way. Wearing people down and getting a lot of transition baskets off turnovers should be the way to go about it. Not playing half court slowing the game down and helping all the teams that doesn't have the depth we do all the time.

He is stubborn so don't think anything will ever change his philosophy. With the advantages of recruiting and us being Kentucky, we should be blowing a lot more people out than what we do. Just not gonna happen a lot playing the type of game that helps our opponents the most.

You do know that getting kids to the NBA and winning championships are not mutually exclusive. He can want to do both and in fact, the deeper he goes, the more likely it is his players get drafted higher. It isn’t one or the other like you and many of our other fans make it sound.

Suggestions?
Said he is contemplating shortening his bench and making players earn playing time in practice. Threatening players if they don't pass will sit them next game. Gonna try and put a couple more wrinkles in to keep teams off balance. Wants players to start shooting more on their own to get better at it. Talked like the best we could do against OH ST is hang close and have a chance and we did. His players don't trust teammates and they should. Maxey has such a high will to win takes it on himself to get it done. OH ST just too physical for our players. Whitney is a really good kid. Knows fans not happy but they have a process they stick with. We have shown we are a top tier team playing good teams close. Need to get Nick and EJ going, figure out how to get them the ball more. Only need to make 5 to 10 threes a game and we will be ok. Just needs to worry about his team and not others. Where would we be without Nate? Every game going to be a battle from here on out because everybody hates us so.

Overall to me sounds like just going to tweak a few things, hope the players get better on their own and hope they start passing the ball more. No mention of any real changes so expect most games to be a struggle and hope we can pull a bunch out at the end.

Of course he’d like to do both. But his recruiting strategy to get OADs is geared more toward the NBA.

Not mutually exclusive I’ll give you that. But there’s only way to get players to the league as quickly as possible. There are several approaches to winning it all.

What’s the only way? Did WCS, the Harrison twins, Josh Harrelson fall into that one and only way?

A bigger question is how the boosters feel about this? For all of the money he's being paid they can't be pleased with the recent results.

Good Point. The only 2 things that will make Cal change is the Boosters, and ticket sales going down.

Remember when Joker played Vandy at home his last year? Couldn't fill 80% of the stands for the game. If that happens at Rupp more consecutively and people don't renew their season tickets and those season tickets are not being bought, then Mitch might have a chat with Cal. Unfortunately, money talks.

Does anyone know any boosters who are not happy with Cal?

You think either last year's team or 2017 was built to win a title? As in a team built to scare people? That's what UK basketball is all about, and what Cal was all about his first 5 years. We haven't seen a product on the court like that in a long time.

It's not "most", it's probably not even "many". Just the same old spoiled crybabies and low post trolls. Highest winning percentage in the last 10 years and coach of the decade doesn't hear you squeaky wheels. Your noise is too stupid to contemplate.

You do realize Mitch will be using actual marketing data and competitive pressure information. He won’t be listening to stupidity spewed on Rafters.

Wait... 2017 was a solid roster. That team could have very easily won the title. That doesn't fit your agenda though. Keep making it up as you go

Again, hyperbole is not your friend. But since you didn't really answer the question I guess I got my answer.

My answer was to the fact that college basketball is down all across the board. This years winner maybe some team you don’t think is a contender right now that gets hot at the right time. It could be us. It could be some other team. There is nobody Out there that at this moment I want to avoid. So things aren’t as bad as some people think.

Agreed, and unfortunately that's where I and a lot of other fans are these days. I just DVR the bigger games now and watch them if we win - I can't handle the poor offense and even worse officiating to watch it live. I'll still watch the others live, although Evansville and Utah have me rethinking that one too. I used to also travel to 2 SEC road games a year that are near me but haven't done that in about 5 years now. SEC road games are 50/50 now with the teams that Cal is building, and that's not good enough to warrant tickets/time anymore.
Lol I thought I was the only one doing this. From 08-17 I recorded every single game and always watched live as well. Last couple years I’ve stopped recording any of it. I’ll watch the normal games but find myself not wanting to watch games against good teams just because I don’t want that to be put in a bad mood and my stress level go up.

I wish Cal would quit tomorrow as an early Christmas present for some of you.

I think too many of you need be reminded that almost none of these young players came to UK because “UK is bigger than any one coach”, or UKs history, or Rupp’s success in the 50’s (Rupp went to one final 4 and had zero titles his last 14 years!)

They came because of Cal. They go to Duke because of K

when Cal leaves you clowns will see that it will never be the same as it is right now now, again. Uk was a place NOBODY wanted to coach after BCG. At least nobody the fans would have deemed worthy.

Seriously, if Cal was “run out of town” tomorrow, WHO THE F*CK DO YOU THINK WOULD COME HERE???? Serious question. I’m curious what those of you that are “over this” think the plan would be after running out the coach that won more games than any other program during his tenure here

In all seriousness, Cal will probably read these boards and say. JC cats is right, I need to teach these guys to block out, and if it weren't for 2 hand set shot I would have never known I didn't run an offense. Wonder if Flip Flops is available to help me coach? … Then again, maybe he doesn't

I grew up about 150 feet from one of the big Athletic Department boosters and his family. Saw them at my uncle's funeral a couple of years ago and I would not say that they're "unhappy" with Cal but they were a bit disappointed with only one title for the money they're paying. From what he told me, Cal had promised that he would break UCLA's record for National Titles and it hasn't happened. I think the next 3-4 years will tell us a lot about the sentiment of the big money people.

I, and I would guess the majority of the people on here, would strongly disagree with this.

The fans seemed cal worthy and he wanted it first of all. It was his dream job. Plenty of coaches wanted it after tubby left too. And after Pitino left. And even after Sutton left. It’s one of the top 5 jobs in college basketball and that’s not going to change anytime soon and it likely won’t matter how Cal exits. It never has mattered how or why the previous guy left.

Your post reads more like you’re a John Calipari fan and not a Kentucky Wildcat fan.

that’s not exactly where I am but it’s where I’m headed. I do t want to head that way . But if cal is going to stick to this grind it out style and stifle good offensive players I’ll just tune in less and less , and after dropping a few grand to spend a week in Vegas to watch us not play with any enthusiasm on Wed and get schooled by a bunch of turds I’ve decided to try to back off my fanatical dedication to the games . And program . I’ll watch - but I’m not going out if my way again to attend

Let me preface this by saying that I don't think anyone else but Cal could handle the UK job as it now stands. We all know the man can coach or he would not have built solid programs at UMASS and Memphis. However, I think that the majority of us would like to see him go back to developing players as the OAD model isn't working like it did before. As for his offense, I don't recall it being this bad at UMASS and Memphis so it's hard to figure out what's happened in his philosophy. Basketball is a rhythm game and at times it does seem that the offensive style is holding back players. I'm no coach so that's merely an opinion.
