Alabama or any other “blue blood” program in the SEC is not the M.O. that we should be looking or going for?
When we initially hired Mullen, immediately what I was most excited about was NOT his success and Florida, but rather his success at Bowling Green and Utah. Because those two places translated to Mississippi State- in regards to the reality of competing and playing AGAINST the “blue bloods” in the SEC. His first stint at Florida just confirmed the success he had at places with lesser resources. So again, that’s the M.O. we should be looking and going for in a coach and overall football program. Quit trying to be a poor man’s Alabama, Penn State, LSU, or Southern Cal.

How have we copied anyone in any way other than that we hired a football coach.

There are only 3 places that all coaches come from. 1) Other schools 2) The assistant/coordinator ranks 3) The trash heap.

So who is copying who?

Anytime State has had any real success is when we’ve gone against the grain. The grain being trying to emulate the “blue bloods.” In my life time, our success in the 90’s came in part because of Joe Lees Dunn’s against the grain defensive scheme. When Mullen came, he basically ran the option offense with a midget and Tight End playing quarterback. Remember that time in 2010 we beat Florida’s *** in the Swamp and Relf was 4 for only 9 pass attempts for 33 yards for the whole game? Of course Mullen expanded things as he recruited and developed the talent level. But the point is the same, the his base offensive philosophy at State was the same. He went against the grain, did what he had to do to win us a few games, and keep us in most of the the ones we lost.

Said in another thread. You have a man beat down by mistakes who probably needed support to keep him where he is now. This guy has to have strong trust and faith in his inner circle. I believe that

He was once the hottest coach in college football. He’s an elite recruiter and has learned under the goat. We could do worse. He needs to put together a solid staff, obviously.

Mississippi State does not need an offensive minded head coach with a West Coast and NFL scheme and philosophy. That is for the blue bloods and NFL talent across the field on offense. It’s not going to work here- in competing against the blue bloods.

Every time we fire a coach who fails with this philosophy, we are one coach closer to the one who wins with it.
